For a moment, Dabo Swinney thought the citizens of South Carolina — or at least the Clemson fans in South Carolina — had decided that they had enough of him after the Tigers' latest loss.
Just days before Election Day 2024, Clemson dropped its second game of the season to Louisville. Now at 6-2 (5-1 ACC) and fighting for their College Football Playoff relevancy, not to mention their spot in the ACC rankings, Swinney found himself unable to vote because of a mishap.
Speaking to the media about it afterward, he joked that Clemson's record must have made him a "marked man" at the polls.
“They done voted me out of the state,” Swinney said as a joke, according to FOX Carolina. “We’re 6-2 and 5-1, man. They done shipped me off.”
Swinney may be feeling the pressure at Clemson since the Tigers haven't found themselves in the CFP since 2019, when they won the whole thing. What really happened at the polls, though, was that Dabo, whose legal name is William Swinney, wasn't able to receive a ballot because his oldest son, also William Swinney, voted earlier in the week and his ballot was mistakenly marked as Dabo's.
The good news is that Dabo was able to complete a paper ballot and there's apparently a hearing scheduled later this week to ensure both William Swinneys will have their respective vote counted. At the very least, the elder Swinney may be able to enjoy a sigh of relief that he hasn't worn out his welcome just yet.
“I was trying to do my best and be a good citizen and go vote,” he said. “Sometimes doing your best ain’t good enough. You have to keep going though, keep figuring it out.”
