Clemson Plays Its Last ACC Opponent of 2025 

We are entering the final stretch of the 2025 college football regular season. Many Clemson fans might be happy about this, given how underwhelming the year was for the program. The Tigers have just three games left, with two of them being on the road. The first road trip will be to Louisville for a Friday night conference showdown. It will be Clemson’s last ACC game of 2025.

The Tigers are currently 3-4 in conference games. Losing this game will mean they finish below .500 in ACC play for the first time since 1998. A win in this game, though, will be the final nail in the coffin for the Cardinals’ hopes of competing in the ACC Championship game.

Dabo Swinney and his team should be fired up to hit the reverse button on Louisville for what happened a year ago. The Cardinals beat Clemson in Memorial Stadium last season, nearly crushing its postseason dreams. Now, the Tigers get the chance to do the same to the Cards.

Matchup History

This will be the 10th meeting between these programs all-time. They first played each other in Louisville’s inaugural season as a member of the ACC in 2014. Clemson won that game 23-17. That started the Tigers’ eight-game winning streak against the Cardinals, which led to their current 8-1 series lead.

Louisville got its first-ever win over Clemson last season, 33-21. That win nearly knocked the Tigers out of contention for the ACC Championship. This year, the Cards are right on the outside looking in on the conference championship race. After losing to California last weekend, a loss this week likely completely eliminates Jeff Brohm’s team from the ACC title chase.

Louisville’s Stout Defense

The thing Clemson needs to worry about the most when it comes to this Louisville team is its stout defense. The Cardinals rank second in the ACC and 14th in the FBS in total defense. Much of this is largely due to their pass defense, which is the best in the conference.

The Cards’ defense is allowing just 188.1 yards through the air. The defensive backs have great ball skills and are very opportunistic. They have accumulated 12 total interceptions, the second most in the ACC to this point in the season.

Clemson Defense Must Come Through

In order for Clemson to stay in and win this game, the defense has to show up. The Tigers’ defense underperformed in key spots many times this season. They played very well last weekend against Florida State, though. In that game, the Clemson defense held the previous top-ranked scoring offense in the ACC to just 10 points. Now Tom Allen has to get his unit to bring the same energy while also continuing to raise their performance level.

Last season, Cards running back Isaac Brown had his way with the Clemson defense. He ran for 151 yards against the Tigers. Brown returned to Louisville this season looking even better than he did last season, with 782 rushing yards racked up in eight games.  The sophomore running back looks unlikely to play in this year’s matchup, though, as he nurses a leg injury he suffered against Virginia Tech.

The Tigers’ defense must take advantage of this and put pressure on quarterback Miller Moss all night long. The Tigers have to make Moss uncomfortable in the pocket, like they did to Thomas Castellanos last week. If the defense can do that, Clemson will put itself in a position to finish conference play with a win on the road.
