© Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

College football's Week 12 slate for the 2024 season produced several outcomes that altered the top 25 rankings. Georgia defeated Tennessee in a huge SEC showdown with College Football Playoff implications. BYU suffered its first defeat of the season with a loss to Kansas, while Arizona State knocked off Kansas State to improve its position for a trip to the Big 12 title game. Oregon, Ohio State, and Penn State picked up key wins in Big Ten play.

Oregon remains No. 1 in the top 25 this week, followed by Ohio State, Texas, and Penn State. Arizona State, UNLV, and Iowa State join the top 25 after in Week 12.

With Week 12 in the books, Athlon Sports ranks the top 25 teams in college football:

1. Oregon (11-0)
Last Week:
1
Week 12 Result: Defeated Wisconsin

It wasn't pretty, but the Ducks defeated Wisconsin 16-13 to escape Madison with its undefeated record (11-0) intact. Oregon's defense held the Badgers to only 226 yards (3.6 yards a snap) and allowed just one third-down conversion on 12 attempts. The Ducks have played eight consecutive games, so next week's off date should provide a needed break for coach Dan Lanning's squad.

2. Ohio State (9-1)
Last Week:
2
Week 12 Result: Defeated Northwestern

Northwestern gave Ohio State a scare early on, but coach Ryan Day's team pulled away for a 31-7 victory at Wrigley Field. The Buckeyes' talented receivers shined, as Carnell Tate grabbed two touchdowns, and Jeremiah Smith caught four passes for 100 yards. After allowing 151 yards on the Wildcats' first two drives, Ohio State's defense allowed only 100 yards the rest of the game.

3. Texas (9-1)
Last Week:
3
Week 12 Result: Defeated Arkansas

A trip to hostile Fayetteville wasn't easy, but Texas escaped with a 20-10 victory over Arkansas to move one step closer to an appearance in the SEC Championship Game. The Longhorns limited the Razorbacks to 231 yards, and the front recorded six sacks to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. The passing game behind quarterback Quinn Ewers was off just a bit, but coach Steve Sarkisian's attack made plays when it mattered in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

4. Penn State (9-1)
Last Week:

Week 12 Result: Defeated Purdue

Tight end Tyler Warren had another monster performance, catching eight passes for 127 yards and a touchdown and adding 63 rushing yards and a score to lead Penn State to an easy 49-10 victory over Purdue. The Nittany Lions averaged 8.8 yards a snap and scored touchdowns on seven of their 10 drives.

Week 12 Result: Lost to Georgia

A 10-0 start in the first quarter gave Tennessee plenty of confidence it was poised to end a seven-game losing streak to Georgia. Instead, the Volunteers were outscored 31-7 the rest of the way and had no answer for the Bulldogs' passing game. Also, Tennessee's standout defensive line was quiet most of the night, recording zero sacks and just two tackles for a loss. Coach Josh Heupel's team isn't out of the playoff mix, but Saturday night's loss puts this team squarely on the bubble.

Week 11 Result: Defeated Maryland

It wasn't the cleanest performance by Oregon, but coach Dan Lanning's team used 18 points in the second half to beat Maryland 39-18. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel was efficient (23 of 34 for 183 yards and three touchdowns), and the offense went five-for-five on red zone scoring trips. 2. Ohio State (8-1)

Week 11 Result: Defeated Purdue

However, coach Josh Heupel's team didn't have to sweat much in a 33-14 victory over Mississippi State. Iamaleava did not return, but Heupel indicated the injury isn't serious and a return for next week's showdown at Georgia is a realistic scenario. Alabama's defense has struggled at times this year, but this unit limited the Tigers to 5.2 yards a snap and forced three takeaways. Week 11 Result:
Defeated Georgia

The Rebels faced a must-win situation for Saturday's game against Georgia and delivered the best victory of coach Lane Kiffin's tenure with a 28-10 upset. Although Kiffin's teams in Oxford are known for offense, it was the defense that led the way on Saturday afternoon. Ole Miss limited the Bulldogs to 245 yards, forced three turnovers, and recorded five sacks. Also, quarterback Jaxson Dart (199 passing yards) was clutch against one of the SEC's top defenses after an ankle injury forced him to miss a series in the first half.

11. Georgia (7-2)

The Bulldogs were surprisingly dominated in a 28-10 loss at Ole Miss. Both sides of the ball are to blame for the defeat in Oxford. 20. LSU (6-3)
Last Week: 13
Week 11 Result: Lost to Alabama

Week 10 Result: Defeated Penn State

The line of scrimmage and clutch plays fueled Ohio State's huge 20-13 win at Penn State. Despite a shorthanded offensive line, the Buckeyes churned out 176 crucial yards on the ground and kept the pocket clean for quarterback Will Howard on the bulk of passing downs. On defense, Ohio State limited the Nittany Lions to 120 rushing yards, picked off a pass in the end zone at the end of the first half, and got a key stop on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line with five minutes to go to help seal the victory.

8. Miami (4-0)
Last Week:
10
Week 4 Result: Defeated South Florida

South Florida gave Miami a battle in the first half, but the 'Canes pulled away for a 50-15 blowout to move to 4-0. Quarterback Cam Ward posted another huge night, throwing for 404 yards and three scores and leading the offense to an average of 9.3 yards a snap. Miami's defense did not allow a point in the second half and allowed only 143 yards in that span.

9. Penn State (3-0)
Last Week:

Week 4 Result: Defeated Kent State

As expected, Penn State demolished Kent State 56-0 to move to 3-0 in '24. The Nittany Lions outgained the Golden Flashes 718 to 67, with quarterback Drew Allar (309 yards and three touchdowns) turning in big performance against an overmatched defense.

10. Utah (4-0)
Last Week:
12
Week 4 Result: Defeated Oklahoma State

The Utes had to play without starting quarterback Cameron Rising, but true freshman Isaac Wilson (17 of 29 for 207 yards and 41 rushing yards) was good enough for a huge 22-19 win in Stillwater. In what might've been a preview of the Big 12 title game, Utah's defense limited Oklahoma State to just 285 yards and held running back Ollie Gordon II to 42 yards on 11 carries.

11. Missouri (4-0)
Last Week:
9
Week 4 Result: Defeated Vanderbilt

The Tigers drop a couple of spots after an overtime 30-27 win over Vanderbilt. Quarterback Brady Cook was solid (23 of 37 for 226 yards and two scores), but the big-play element of Missouri's offense is still missing. After struggling early, the Tigers stepped up on defense in the second half and limited the Commodores to 4.4 yards a snap in the final two quarters. Three missed field goals are also a concern for coach Eli Drinkwitz.

12. Michigan (3-1)
Last Week:
17
Week 4 Result: Defeated USC

A last-minute 27-24 victory over USC could change the trajectory of Michigan's season. The switch to Alex Orji at quarterback didn't produce huge passing totals (32 yards), but the Wolverines found something in the win. Running back Kalel Mullings pounded the Trojans' defense for 159 rushing yards, and Michigan's defense owned the line of scrimmage. Building the passing game is still a priority, but the Wolverines can lean on Orji, Mullings, and Donovan Edwards to power the offense and rely on a standout defense to keep things close.

13. Notre Dame (3-1)
Last Week:
15
Week 4 Result: Defeated Miami (Ohio)

Notre Dame seemed destined for a repeat showing of the Northern Illinois loss early in the first half, but coach Marcus Freeman's squad eventually got on track and pulled away for a 28-3 victory. The Fighting Irish once again leaned on their ground game (270 yards) and a strong defensive effort (just 229 yards allowed) to defeat the RedHawks.

14. USC (2-1)
Last Week:
11
Week 4 Result: Loss to Michigan

USC has made strides on defense under new coordinator D'Anton Lynn, but this unit still gave up too many big plays on the ground in Saturday's 27-24 loss at Michigan. The Wolverines recorded three rushes of 40-plus yards and pounded the Trojans for 290 overall yards on the ground. Quarterback Miller Moss threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns but an interception returned for a score in the second half was costly in a three-point defeat.

15. LSU (3-1)
Last Week:

Week 4 Result: Defeated UCLA

LSU was a heavy favorite for Saturday's matchup against UCLA, and after a sluggish start, coach Brian Kelly's team pulled away for a 34-17 victory. The defense struggled early but eventually limited the Bruins to 89 yards in the second half. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns over 32 completions.

16. Clemson (2-1)
Last Week: 19
Week 4 Result: Defeated NC State

The Tigers scored 28 points in the first quarter and led 45-7 at halftime to cruise to an easy 59-35 victory over NC State. Although the Wolfpack scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, this game was a mismatch from the opening snap. Quarterback Cade Klubnik (16 of 24 for 209 yards and four total scores) was sharp again, and running back Phil Mafah chipped in 107 yards on the ground.

17. Iowa State (3-0)
Last Week:
20
Week 4 Result: Defeated Arkansas State

A 14-point first quarter gave Iowa State early breathing room, as coach Matt Campbell's team pulled away for a 52-7 victory against Arkansas State. The Cyclones outgained the Red Wolves 490-182, with the defense forcing four turnovers and generating four sacks in the blowout.

18. Louisville (3-0)

19. Illinois (4-0)
Last Week: Not Ranked
Week 4 Result: Defeated Nebraska

The Fighting Illini join the top 25 after an upset win at Nebraska on Friday night. The victory over the Cornhuskers added to a solid start this year for coach Bret Bielema's squad after an earlier victory against Kansas. Both sides of the ball were instrumental in the win. Quarterback Luke Altmyer threw for 215 yards and four touchdowns, while the ground game churned out 166 yards. Also, the defense forced a turnover in the end zone and made timely plays in overtime to seal the win.

20. Oklahoma (3-1)
Last Week:
18
Week 4 Result: Lost to Tennessee

The Sooners were overmatched in their SEC opener, losing 25-15 to Tennessee on Saturday night. The offensive line has been a source of concern all year and struggled mightily against the Volunteers' standout front. Also, quarterback Jackson Arnold was pulled after an uneven performance, and backup Michael Hawkins Jr. played well in limited time. Hawkins Jr. could be the No. 1 signal-caller moving forward.

21. Oklahoma State (3-1)
Last Week:
14
Week 4 Result: Lost to Utah

A lackluster rushing attack and a struggling defense plagued Oklahoma State once again in a 22-19 loss to Utah. In a game that was billed as a potential preview of the Big 12 title game, the Cowboys gave up 456 yards to a Utes' offense led by a backup quarterback. Also, coach Mike Gundy's ground game was held in check by Utah, as star running back Ollie Gordon II was limited to 42 yards over 11 carries. As a result, Oklahoma State's offense sputtered (285 total yards) all afternoon.

22. BYU (4-0)
Last Week:

Week 4 Result: Defeated Kansas State

BYU was outgained 363 to 241 in total yardage, but the final score (38-9) represented total domination by the Cougars against Kansas State. Coach Kalani Sitake's team forced three turnovers, including a 30-yard fumble return for a score, and Parker Kingston returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown. After winning five games all of last year, BYU has already recorded four in the first four weeks of '24.

23. Kansas State (3-1)
Last Week: 13
Week 4 Result: Lost to BYU

The Wildcats tumble from No. 13 to No. 24 after a blowout 38-9 loss to BYU. K-State made too many mistakes (three turnovers), gave up a touchdown on special teams, and struggled to finish drives on offense. Coach Chris Klieman's team needs to quickly hit the reset button with a huge showdown against Oklahoma State on tap next week.

24. Texas A&M (3-1)
Last Week:
24
Week 4 Result: Defeated Bowling Green

It wasn't pretty, but coach Mike Elko's team held off Bowling Green's upset bid for a 26-20 victory on Saturday night. A week after Texas A&M's offense torched Florida's defense, the Aggies weren't quite as prolific this week (5.7 yards a play) and settled for too many field goals (four). Also, Elko's defense gave up too many yards through the air (250).

25. Iowa (3-1)

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 3)

1. Texas (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated UTSA

A week after Texas delivered a statement win at Michigan, coach Steve Sarkisian's team avoided a letdown performance in a 56-7 victory against UTSA. Quarterback Quinn Ewers suffered an abdominal injury, but Arch Manning (223 passing yards and four scores and 53 rushing yards) was sharp in relief. Also, the defense held the Roadrunners to 3.8 yards a snap. After Georgia's sluggish win at Kentucky, Texas slides into the No. 1 spot after Week 3.

2. Georgia (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Kentucky

It wasn't pretty, but Georgia found a way to beat Kentucky 13-12 on Saturday night in Lexington. Coach Kirby Smart's defense played well (limited the Wildcats to 284 yards), but the offense never found its rhythm and was outplayed in the trenches. The Bulldogs also have to do a better job against the run (170 yards allowed to Kentucky). Although a strong case can be made for Georgia to still be the best team in the nation, the close call to the Wildcats drops Smart's squad to No. 2.

3. Ohio State (2-0)
Week 3 Result:
Off Week

The Buckeyes did not play on Saturday due to an off week. Ohio State returns to action next Saturday against Marshall.

4. Ole Miss (3-0)

Defeated Wake Forest

Another week, another blowout by Ole Miss. After thumping Furman and Middle Tennessee in the first two contests, coach Lane Kiffin's squad stepped up in competition to play at Wake Forest on Saturday. 5. Alabama (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Wisconsin

6. Oregon (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Oregon State

After uneven showings against Idaho and Boise State, Oregon finally put together a complete performance in Saturday's 49-14 win over Oregon State. The offensive line struggles that plagued the Ducks were largely absent versus the Beavers, as the ground game churned out 240 yards and quarterback Dillon Gabriel wasn't sacked. Oregon's rush defense also limited Oregon State's standout ground game to just 131 yards over 32 carries.

7. Tennessee (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Kent State

As expected, Tennessee dominated Kent State in a 71-0 shutout on Saturday night. The Volunteers scored on 11 of their 12 drives, while the Golden Flashes had only two drives that extended beyond 30 yards. A huge road trip to Oklahoma for the SEC opener is on tap for Tennessee next week.

Defeated Ball State

For the second week in a row, Miami didn't have to sweat too much in order to get a win on the scoreboard. Behind 346 passing yards from quarterback Cam Ward and a dominant defense (2.2 yards per play allowed), the 'Canes crushed Ball State 62-0 and move to 3-0 for the second year in a row.

The Trojans had an off Saturday in Week 3. Coach Lincoln Riley's team returns to action next Saturday at Michigan for its Big Ten opener.

12. Utah (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Utah State

13. Kansas State (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Arizona

A matchup of top-25 teams quickly turned into a one-sided affair, as Kansas State pounded Arizona 31-7 in Manhattan. Defeated Purdue

A week after an awful showing in a 16-14 loss to Northern Illinois, Notre Dame rebounded in a big way, pounding Purdue 66-7. The ground game (362 rushing yards) and defense (162 yards allowed) led the way in the blowout over the Boilermakers. Quarterback Riley Leonard (11 of 16 for 112 passing yards and 100 rushing yards) also played well after a sluggish performance in Week 2.

16. LSU (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated South Carolina

In a back-and-forth and entertaining battle in Columbia, LSU found a way to escape with a 36-33 win over South Carolina. Coach Brian Kelly's team fell behind 17-0 but used 16 points in the second quarter and 14 in the final 15 minutes to seal the victory. In addition to the win, the Tigers showed signs of life on the ground (132 rushing yards), and the defense made enough timely stops despite giving up too many big plays.

17. Michigan (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Arkansas State

The Wolverines rebounded from last week's blowout defeat to Texas with a 28-18 victory against Arkansas State. The ground game showed signs of life (301 yards), but coach Sherrone Moore still needs better play from his quarterbacks after Davis Warren tossed three interceptions.

18. Oklahoma (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Tulane

After a sluggish performance versus Houston, Oklahoma responded with a better all-around effort in Saturday's 34-19 win over Tulane. Coach Brent Venables' offense still bogged down for a chunk of the second half and struggled along the line, but quarterback Jackson Arnold (169 yards through the air and 97 on the ground) showed improvement after a shaky outing in Week 2. The defense also stepped up with the game on the line, not allowing the Green Wave to score on their final five possessions.

22. Louisville (2-0)
Week 3 Result:
Off Week

The Cardinals were off in Week 3 after opening the season with victories against Austin Peay and Jacksonville State. Coach Jeff Brohm's team returns to action next Saturday against Georgia Tech.

23. Memphis (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Florida State

It's still early in the 2024 season, but Memphis' road win at Florida State could be huge later in the year for positioning among Group of 5 teams for a spot in the CFB Playoff. Quarterback Seth Henigan (272 yards) was steady as always, but the real story from the Tigers' victory was its defense. This unit limited the 'Noles to 37 rushing yards, generated 12 tackles for a loss, and forced a couple of takeaways.

24. Texas A&M (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Florida

Redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed (11 of 17 for 178 yards and 83 rushing yards) impressed in his first start for the Aggies and guided the team to a 33-20 victory at Florida. Texas A&M's offense pounded the Gators for 310 yards on the ground, which helped the team control time of possession (37:46 to 22:14) and keep its defense fresh in difficult conditions.

25. Northern Illinois (2-0)
Week 3 Result:
Off Week

A week after its massive upset at Notre Dame, Northern Illinois had an off date for Week 3. Coach Thomas Hammock's squad returns to action against Buffalo next Saturday.

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 2)

1. Georgia (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Clemson

As expected, the Bulldogs handled Tennessee Tech with ease in a 48-3 victory. Quarterback Carson Beck tossed five touchdowns, and Georgia's defense suffocated the Golden Eagles (134 yards allowed). Up next: A key SEC showdown at Kentucky.

2. Texas (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Michigan

Total domination is the best way to sum up Texas' 31-12 win at Michigan. The Longhorns won the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball, as the offensive front provided quality protection for quarterback Quinn Ewers and helped the running backs rush for 143 yards. And on defense, Texas limited the Wolverines to just 80 on the ground and 284 total yards.

3. Ohio State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Western Michigan

Ohio State turned in a complete team effort in a 56-0 blowout of Western Michigan. The defense limited the Broncos to 99 total yards, while the offense recorded 683 over 72 plays. Quarterback Will Howard was steady (292 yards), and the one-two punch of Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson ran for 174 yards over 19 carries.

4. Ole Miss (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Middle Tennessee

Lane Kiffin's team turned in its second dominant performance in a row to start the '24 season. The Rebels scored 17 points in the first quarter and led 31-3 at halftime before beating Middle Tennessee 52-3. Running back Henry Parrish chipped in four rushing scores, and quarterback Jaxson Dart misfired on just two passes. Kiffin's defense has allowed only three points through the first two games of the year.

5. Alabama (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated South Florida

Alabama beat South Florida 42-16 on Saturday night, but the final score wasn't indicative of how close the game actually was. The Crimson Tide struggled with turnovers (three), penalties (13), and couldn't protect quarterback Jalen Milroe (sacked three times). With a trip to Wisconsin on tap, first-year coach Kalen DeBoer has several issues to clean up this week.

6. Oregon (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Boise State

Boise State gave Oregon all it could handle in Autzen Stadium on Saturday night. The Ducks escaped with a 37-34 victory thanks to a field goal as time expired, but it certainly wasn't an easy victory. Coach Dan Lanning's team lost two turnovers, struggled along the line of scrimmage, and committed nine penalties. Although the Ducks found a way to win, this team needs to make significant improvement (and in a hurry) to challenge Ohio State atop the Big Ten.

7. Penn State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Bowling Green

A week after an impressive road win at West Virginia, Penn State turned in a sluggish effort versus Bowling Green in a 34-27 win. The defense struggled mightily in the first half by allowing 7.9 yards a snap, but this unit played better in the final two quarters and allowed just three points to the Falcons. Running backs Nicholas Singleton (119 yards) and Kaytron Allen (101 yards) powered a ground game that ran for 234 yards.

8. Miami (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Florida A&M

Several ranked teams struggled in Week 2, but Miami took care of business in a 56-9 win over Florida A&M. Quarterback Cameron Ward was sharp again (304 yards), and the 'Canes limited the Rattlers to 194 total yards over 53 snaps.

9. Tennessee (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated NC State

An anticipated showdown in Charlotte between Tennessee and NC State turned into a one-sided affair. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw for 211 yards and accounted for three overall scores, but the real story on Saturday night was the play of coach Josh Heupel's defense. This unit limited the Wolfpack to just 143 yards and generated 13 tackles for a loss.

10. Missouri (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Buffalo

The Tigers handled Buffalo for an easy 38-0 win on Saturday. Coach Eli Drinkwitz's team has posted back-to-back shutouts for first time since 1935. Receiver Luther Burden III left Saturday night's game due to illness but is not expected to miss any extended action this season.

11. Utah (2-0)
Week 2 Result
: Defeated Baylor

Utah jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the first half and held on for a 23-12 win over Baylor. Quarterback Cam Rising's finger injury hindered the offense over the final two quarters, but the Utes standout defense (just 3.7 yards per play allowed) prevented the Bears from getting too close on the scoreboard. According to coach Kyle Whittingham, Rising's injury isn't serious and he could return for Week 3.

12. USC (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Utah State

USC's defense continued its solid play under new coordinator D'Anton Lynn by pitching a shutout in a 48-0 win over Utah State. The Trojans limited the Aggies to 190 yards and recorded three sacks in the strong effort on Saturday night. Quarterback Miller Moss was solid (229 passing yards), while the ground game churned out 249 yards and five scores.

13. Kansas State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Tulane

The Wildcats escaped New Orleans and upset-minded Tulane with a 34-27 win. After trailing 20-10 at halftime, coach Chris Klieman's team scored 24 points over the final two quarters and made a late goal-line stand to seal the win. Quarterback Avery Johnson needs to be sharper through the air, and K-State's defense must improve after allowing 7.6 yards a snap. However, finding a way to win against a good opponent in Week 2 is a positive for Klieman's squad.

14. Oklahoma State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Arkansas

Despite being outgained 648 to 385 in yardage, Oklahoma State somehow found a way to beat Arkansas 39-31 in overtime. The Cowboys had plenty of help from the Razorbacks in the win, as Arkansas had two turnovers, missed a field goal, and gave up 6.4 yards per snap in the second half. Running back Ollie Gordon II was relatively quiet (49 yards), but quarterback Alan Bowman (326 yards) came up in the clutch.

15. Notre Dame (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Lost to Northern Illinois

A week after picking up one of the biggest victories of Week 1 at Texas A&M, Notre Dame suffered a massive setback with a shocking 16-14 loss to Northern Illinois. Coach Marcus Freeman's standout defense shares blame for the loss, but the biggest issue was an offense that managed only 286 yards. Quarterback Riley Leonard struggled (two picks) and no completion went beyond 19 yards.

16. Michigan (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Lost to Texas

The Wolverines were simply outclassed and outmanned in a 31-12 loss to Texas. First-year coach Sherrone Moore has a lot of work to do to get a rebuilt offense on track, as Michigan struggled to run the ball on the Longhorns (80 yards) and converted only three of 12 third-down attempts. Also, the passing game (both quarterbacks and receivers) remains a major concern going into Big Ten play.

17. LSU (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Nicholls

The Bayou Bengals rebounded from their Week 1 loss to USC by beating Nicholls 44-21. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier tossed six touchdowns, but the ground game (64 yards) and defense (21 points allowed) struggled at times. A showdown at South Carolina awaits coach Brian Kelly's team next Saturday.

18. Oklahoma (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Houston

The Sooners didn't inspire much confidence with a 16-12 victory over Houston. For the second week in a row, Oklahoma's offense was sluggish (249 total yards) and the line struggled to clear rushing lanes or protect quarterback Jackson Arnold. With Tulane and Tennessee up next, the Sooners have a lot to fix if they want to remain a top-25 squad for the remainder of the '24 season.

19. Clemson (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Appalachian State

A week after Clemson's offense managed only 188 yards and three points against Georgia, this unit took out some frustration on Appalachian State. Coach Dabo Swinney's attack recorded 712 yards (9.8 yards a snap) and posted 66 points in a 66-20 victory. This game also produced a needed rebound effort from quarterback Cade Klubnik (378 yards and five touchdowns).

20. Iowa State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Iowa

The Cyclones rallied from a 19-7 deficit in the third quarter to upset rival Iowa 20-19. Kicker Kyle Konrardy nailed a 54-yard field goal with one second left to lift coach Matt Campbell's team to its second consecutive win over the Hawkeyes in Iowa City.

21. Arizona (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Northern Arizona

A 22-10 victory against Northern Arizona wasn't pretty, but first-year coach Brent Brennan moved to 2-0 with a huge showdown looming against Kansas State in Week 3.

22. Nebraska (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Colorado

The Cornhuskers put away Colorado in the first half with a strong performance on both sides of the ball, leading to a 28-10 victory on Saturday night. Although coach Matt Rhule's team needed to be better in the second half, the defense (just 260 yards allowed), and freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola (185 passing yards) impressed once again.

23. Louisville (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Jacksonville State

After handling Austin Peay 62-0 in the opener, Louisville didn't have to sweat much in Week 2 with a 49-14 victory against Jacksonville State. Behind quarterback Tyler Shough (349 yards and two scores), the Cardinals recorded 610 total yards (8.6 a snap) and scored touchdowns on four of their first five drives.

24. Syracuse (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Georgia Tech

Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord was sharp for the second week in a row, completing 32 of 46 passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns in Syracuse's 31-28 upset of Georgia Tech.

25. Memphis (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Troy

The Tigers used 211 rushing yards and a steady effort from quarterback Seth Henigan (161 passing yards) to beat Troy 38-17. Next week's game at Florida State looms large for Memphis and its hopes of building a strong resume to earn a CFB Playoff spot this December.

3. Texas (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Colorado State

Quarterback Quinn Ewers (20 of 27 for 260 yards and three scores) was sharp in an easy 52-0 win over Colorado State. 4. Ole Miss (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Furman

The Rebels cruised to a 76-0 victory over Furman on Saturday night. Quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 418 yards and five touchdowns, while the defense limited the Paladins to 172 yards.

5. Alabama (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Western Kentucky

New coach, same Alabama. Kalen DeBoer's debut was a success. The Crimson Tide averaged 9.2 yards per play, and the defense held Western Kentucky to 145 yards in a 63-0 blowout. Freshman receiver Ryan Williams (two catches for 139 yards and two scores) was impressive.

6. Notre Dame (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Texas A&M

The Fighting Irish scored the biggest win in Week 1 with a 23-13 victory at Texas A&M. New quarterback Riley Leonard couldn't get much going through the air (158 yards) but he ran for 63 yards. Running back Jeremiyah Love also chipped in 91 hard-fought yards. Notre Dame's defense suffocated the Aggies' offense, limiting this group to 246 yards over 68 plays. It's only Week 1, but this victory is huge for Notre Dame's playoff hopes.

7. Oregon (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Idaho

New starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel (380 yards and two touchdowns) was productive in his Oregon debut, but the offensive line and ground game sputtered in a sluggish 24-14 win over Idaho. The Ducks have a lot of issues to clean up before next Saturday's game versus Boise State.

8. Penn State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated West Virginia

The hire of Andy Kotelnicki as Penn State's offensive coordinator is already paying dividends. The Nittany Lions displayed a much-improved attack in Saturday's 34-12 road win at West Virginia. Quarterback Drew Allar completed 11 of 17 throws for 216 yards and three touchdowns. The ground game churned out 222 yards over 42 carries. Penn State's defense limited the Mountaineers to 246 yards.

9. Miami (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Florida

The 'Canes made one of the biggest statements of Week 1 in a 41-17 victory at Florida. New quarterback Cam Ward (26 of 35 for 385 yards and three touchdowns) was sharp in the Swamp, and the defense limited the Gators to just 261 yards. Coach Mario Cristobal's team should be the favorite to win the ACC.

10. Michigan (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Fresno State

It wasn't necessarily pretty, but the Wolverines began their national title defense with a 30-10 win over Fresno State. The offense is clearly a work in progress (269 yards) for new coach Sherrone Moore, and question marks remain about the offensive line and quarterback play. However, as Saturday night showed, Michigan's defense remains dominant (247 yards allowed and one interception return for a touchdown).

11. Missouri (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Murray State

High expectations surround Missouri in 2024, and coach Eli Drinkwitz's squad started the year on a high note with a 51-0 win over Murray State. Transfer running backs Nate Noel and Marcus Carroll shined. A couple of other portal additions, Toriano Pride and lineman Chris McClellan, shined on defense in the shutout.

12. Tennessee (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Chattanooga

The potential of quarterback Nico Iamaleava (22 of 28 for 314 yards and three scores) was on display in Tennessee's easy 69-3 win over Chattanooga. The Volunteers recorded 718 total yards and limited the Mocs to 10 first downs and 227 yards over 59 plays.

13. Utah (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Southern Utah

Quarterback Cam Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe looked sharp in their return to the gridiron after missing all of 2023 due to injury. Rising completed 10 of 15 passes for 254 yards and five touchdowns. Kuithe caught four passes for 69 yards and three scores in a 49-0 blowout of Southern Utah.

14. USC (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated LSU

An improved defense and the solid play of new quarterback Miller Moss were enough for USC to upset LSU, 27-20, on Sunday night. After struggling with tackling, poor angles and big plays allowed during coach Lincoln Riley's first two years, the Trojans' defense looked like a completely different group under new coordinator D'Anton Lynn.

15. Oklahoma (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Temple

The Sooners cruised to a 51-3 win over Temple in their first game as a member of the SEC. However, coach Brent Venables' team lost receiver Jalil Farooq due to a foot injury, and a revamped offensive line remains a concern after an inconsistent performance against the Owls.

16. Kansas State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated UT Martin

The Wildcats used 24 points in the second half to pull away for a 41-6 victory against UT Martin. The offense pounded away with 283 yards on the ground, and the defense limited the Skyhawks to 134 yards on 55 plays.

17. Oklahoma State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated South Dakota State

South Dakota State wasn't an easy Week 1 matchup, but Oklahoma State used a solid all-around effort to win, 44-20. Quarterback Alan Bowman threw for 267 yards, and running back Ollie Gordon II ran for 104. The Cowboys allowed only 388 yards and limited the Jackrabbits to three third-down conversions on 13 attempts.

18. LSU (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to USC

The Tigers fell short in a high-profile opener for the third year in a row under coach Brian Kelly. Although the defense looked improved under new coordinator Blake Baker, this unit still allowed 7.5 yards a snap in a 27-20 loss to USC.

19. Clemson (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Georgia

A 34-3 loss to Georgia will only increase the questions around coach Dabo Swinney and his reluctance to go into the portal for help each offseason. Although the Tigers remain one of the ACC's top teams, the gap between this program and Georgia (or some of the other top programs) has widened in recent years. A struggling offense (188 yards) also needs to find solutions before conference play.

20. Kansas (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Lindenwood

Quarterback Jalon Daniels threw for 148 yards and one touchdown against Lindenwood in his return to the Kansas lineup after missing nearly all of '23 due to injury. The Jayhawks didn't have to sweat much in a 48-3 win on Thursday night.

21. Arizona (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated New Mexico

New coach Brent Brennan's debut was a success: Arizona defeated New Mexico 61-39 on Saturday night. Receiver Tetairoa McMillan torched the Lobos for 304 yards and four touchdowns over 10 catches.

22. Texas A&M (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Notre Dame

Mike Elko's debut ended with a disappointing 23-13 loss to Notre Dame. The Aggies should have one of the SEC's top defenses, but this team won't finish in the top 25 unless the offense makes major strides behind quarterback Conner Weigman (12 of 30 for 100 yards).

23. Louisville (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Austin Peay

Coach Jeff Brohm's offense (571 total yards) was firing on all cylinders in a 62-0 win over Austin Peay. Leading the way were strong performances by transfer quarterback Tyler Shough (232 yards and four scores) and receiver Ja'Corey Brooks (seven catches for 83 yards).

24. Iowa (1-0)
Week 1 Result: Defeated Illinois State

Illinois State was a favorable matchup for Iowa, but after last season, any signs of life on offense are notable for coach Kirk Ferentz's squad. Quarterback Cade McNamara threw for 251 yards and three scores, and the ground game recorded 241 yards in the 40-0 victory on Saturday.

25. Georgia Tech (2-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Georgia State

After an upset win over Florida State in Week Zero, the Yellow Jackets avoided a letdown by beating Georgia State 35-12.

College Football's Preseason Top 25 Teams for 2024

The 2024 college football season will officially kick off in late August with Week 0 and then again with a full slate of action on Saturday, Aug. 31 for Week 1. Although actual games are still a few months away, it's never too early to project the top 25 teams for the upcoming year. With the transfer portal closed and nearly all roster movement completed for '24, all 134 teams have a clear outlook on strengths, weaknesses, and schedule difficulty for the upcoming season. And as a result, it's easy to start projecting and predicting how every conference stacks up for the upcoming year.

With the College Football Preview Guide on newsstands now, Athlon Sports is unveiling its top 25, predictions, and projections for the upcoming season over the next few weeks. The top 25 teams in this list is a projection on how they will finish at the end of '24 - not how they start the year.

Georgia has claimed two out of the last three national championships and is the projected pick to win it all by Athlon Sports this season. Ohio State is picked to finish No. 2 and the runner up for the national title, with Oregon, Texas, Ole Miss, and Alabama rounding out the next tier. Notre Dame, Missouri, Penn State, and Michigan round out the top 10 as all four programs are set to contend for playoff spots in '24. Two of Athlon's projected conference champions - Florida State (ACC) and Utah (Big 12) - are just outside of the top 10.

With more news to potentially analyze this offseason, this projection and prediction on the top 25 teams could look different by August. However, with the release of the Athlon Sports College Football Preview Guide, these are the projected Top 25 for next season:

1. Georgia
Georgia’s hopes of a three-peat were derailed by Nick Saban and a loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game last season. Saban’s retirement removed one obstacle in the Bulldogs’ challenging path in the SEC, but the schedule isn’t getting any easier in ’24 with road dates at Alabama, Ole Miss and conference newcomer Texas. Although the path is more challenging than it was last year, the Bulldogs are equipped to return to the top of college football. Quarterback Carson Beck passed on the NFL for one more season in Athens and is one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy after throwing for 3,941 yards and 24 scores in his debut. Beck won’t have to do it alone, either, as the offensive line and receiving corps rank among the best in college football. Running back Trevor Etienne transferred from one of Georgia’s rivals (Florida) to fill a void in the backfield. Head coach Kirby Smart’s defense wasn’t quite up to its dominant performance in ’22 but still held opponents to 15.6 points per contest. Getting better against the run, generating more pressure on the pocket and filling a few voids in the secondary are all concerns for Smart this offseason. However, all of those question marks are eased with a roster full of 5-star talent at every level of the depth chart. The new playoff format creates more obstacles and an extended path for every team hunting the No. 1 spot. Although more variables create more unpredictability and surprises, Georgia’s depth, talent and pursuit of perfection under Smart will be tough to beat once again.

2. Ohio State
After three straight losses to Michigan and watching the Wolverines celebrate a national title in ’23, head coach Ryan Day spent the offseason motivated to elevate Ohio State back to the top of college football. Mission accomplished. No area of the program was left intact in the overhaul— starting with himself. Day turned over the offensive play-calling duties to former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly among a few staff tweaks. On the recruiting trail, Day landed 5-star prospect Jeremiah Smith to help alleviate the loss of Marvin Harrison Jr. and keep the Buckeyes wide receiver unit atop the nation. And through the portal, Day added a starting quarterback (Will Howard from Kansas State) and landed running back Quinshon Judkins (Ole Miss) to team with TreVeyon Henderson in the nation’s No. 1 backfield. Nine starters return from a dominant defense, and help is on the way in the form of transfer safety Caleb Downs from Alabama. With Michigan reloading and the annual showdown in Columbus, Ohio State’s busy offseason overhaul came at the right time.

3. Oregon
For the last two years under head coach Dan Lanning, the Ducks have entered November on the doorstep of a CFB Playoff appearance. Even though Oregon is migrating to the Big Ten, the goal is simple: Finish. Lanning took steps to ensure the Ducks could take the next step in the rugged Big Ten by landing transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel (Oklahoma) to replace Bo Nix and reeling in a top-five recruiting haul. The portal also brought receiver Evan Stewart (Texas A&M) to team with Tez Johnson, who returns after catching 86 passes last fall. Standout center Jackson Powers-Johnson will be missed, but the Ducks return a strong foundation in the trenches with three starters back. Lanning dipped into the transfer ranks on defense, too, picking up a couple of key contributors in the trenches (Derrick Harmon and Jamaree Caldwell) and four players in the secondary, including former Washington cornerback Jabbar Muhammad. Oregon will be heavy favorites in its first five contests. However, Oct. 12 looms large as Big Ten title favorite Ohio State visits Eugene in the Ducks’ marquee matchup in their new conference debut.

4. Texas
Last season’s CFB Playoff appearance paused the perennial preseason debate of whether or not Texas was actually back. After silencing the doubters, the Longhorns now must prove that ’23 wasn’t a fluke. The road to a repeat won’t get any easier as the program shifts to the SEC. However, thanks to elite recruiting and talent development, Texas is poised for another trip to the playoff. Quarterback Quinn Ewers returns for his third season under center and is aided by four returning starters — including preseason All-American Kelvin Banks Jr. — up front. Head coach Steve Sarkisian restocked a depleted receiving corps with a trio of key transfer pickups and returns a standout one-two punch at running back in Jaydon Blue and CJ Baxter. The biggest concerns for the Longhorns rest on defense. Replacing 300-pound stalwarts in T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy II on the interior of the line won’t be easy, and there’s plenty of room to improve against the pass.

5. Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin and the Rebels are all in for 2024. After winning 11 games last season, and in anticipation of the expansion of the CFB Playoff, Ole Miss landed one of college football’s top transfer hauls, including a handful of additions to improve a struggling defense. Lineman Walter Nolen (Texas A&M), linebacker Chris Paul (Arkansas) and defensive backs Trey Amos (Alabama) and Brandon Turnage (Tennessee) arrive in Oxford to give coordinator Pete Golding the necessary pieces to improve that side of the ball. As usual, Kiffin will have one of the SEC’s top offenses. Quarterback Jaxson Dart is back, and a few additions from the portal have added to the firepower at the skill positions.

6. Alabama
New coach, same high standards. Kalen DeBoer has big shoes to fill as Nick Saban’s replacement, and although the Crimson Tide have holes to fill along the offensive line, in the receiving corps and in an overhauled secondary, the new staff won’t get much of a honeymoon period in Tuscaloosa. While DeBoer will be under pressure to win right away, the pieces are in place for a return to the CFB Playoff. Quarterback Jalen Milroe should thrive in DeBoer’s high-powered scheme, and Saban left behind plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. An early showdown against Georgia on Sept. 28 provides an early opportunity to make a statement in the SEC.

7. Michigan
The reigning national champs return only five starters, but enough of a foundation remains for new head coach Sherrone Moore to keep this team in the hunt for a Big Ten title. The offense will be a work in progress early in ’24 with five new starters up front and a quarterback battle that could extend into the season. However, a defense anchored by tackle Mason Graham and All-America cornerback Will Johnson can carry this team to another double-digit win total. A Week 2 date against Texas in Ann Arbor is a huge early test to see how far along Moore is in his effort to keep Michigan at the top of the Big Ten.

8. Penn State
Close is the best way to describe Penn State under coach James Franklin. The Nittany Lions have five double-digit win seasons over the last eight years but have only one Big Ten title and zero CFB Playoff trips in that span. In order to break that drought, Penn State needs quarterback Drew Allar to take a step forward after an up-and-down debut. Allar will benefit from the arrival of former Kansas offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, but question marks remain at receiver. The Nittany Lions have had one of the nation’s top defenses in recent years and shouldn’t regress much with six starters back under new coordinator Tom Allen.

9. Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish hope to pair a dominant defense (15.9 points per game allowed in 2023) to go with a much-improved offense to produce a CFB Playoff run in ’24. Former Notre Dame play-caller Mike Denbrock was lured away from LSU after guiding the nation’s No. 1 scoring offense last season. Head coach Marcus Freeman also reeled in a couple of key transfers — including former Duke quarterback Riley Leonard — to improve a unit that struggled against some of its top competition last fall. A revamped offensive line replacing first-round pick Joe Alt and fellow tackle Blake Fisher is the biggest concern. The opener at Texas A&M is a key early test, but swing games versus Louisville and Florida State take place in South Bend.

10. Missouri
Coming off the program’s first double-digit win total (11) since 2014, the Tigers have staying power behind an offense that features quarterback Brady Cook and the nation’s top receiver in Luther Burden III. New coordinator Corey Batoon has holes to fill at every level of one of the SEC’s top defenses. However, a strong class of transfers and incoming freshmen should keep this group performing at a high level. Also, the schedule is favorable. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz’s squad misses Georgia, Texas and Ole Miss in conference play.

Related: 5 Teams With Best Chance to Make CFB Playoff for First Time in 2024

11. LSU
It’s safe to assume the Tigers probably won’t finish No. 1 nationally in scoring offense with quarterback Jayden Daniels and receivers Brian Thomas Jr. and Malik Nabers off to the NFL. But there’s a good chance this group retains its high-scoring ways with rising star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and new play-caller Joe Sloan leading the way. The Bayou Bengals also expect the defense to take a step forward under new coordinator Blake Baker after a disastrous 2023 season. Baker built one of the SEC’s top defenses at Missouri and has ample talent to work with in his debut.

12. Florida State
After last year’s CFB Playoff snub, the Seminoles won’t lack motivation in ’24. Even with a roster in transition after the departure of several stars — including quarterback Jordan Travis, receiver Keon Coleman, and end Jared Verse — head coach Mike Norvell’s squad should be the favorite in the ACC. Norvell hit the transfer portal hard for help on both sides of the ball, landing impact players in quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, receiver Malik Benson, edge rusher Marvin Jones Jr. and defensive back Earl Little. In addition to the portal acquisitions, the Noles return one of the ACC’s top offensive and defensive lines.

Related: Ranking the ACC Coaches for 2024

13. Tennessee
Josh Heupel’s high-octane offense took a step back last season, but a quick rebound is likely in order with rising star quarterback Nico Iamaleava at the controls. Iamaleava — a 5-star prospect in the 2023 signing class — impressed in the Citrus Bowl win over Iowa and is aided by one of the SEC’s top receiving corps and offensive lines. Defensive improvement is needed for the Volunteers to make the CFB Playoff. Just three starters are back for ’24, and question marks surround a secondary that struggled last year. The outlook is more promising up front. End James Pearce Jr. (10 sacks in ’23) is one of the nation’s top returning defenders.

Related: Ranking the SEC Coaches for 2024

14. Utah
Quarterback Cameron Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe are back after missing all of 2023 due to injury, giving the Utes a major boost to an offense that averaged only 23.2 points per game last season. Also easing Utah’s transition to the Big 12 is a defense that once again will be an elite group under coach Kyle Whittingham and coordinator Morgan Scalley. Eight starters return on this side of the ball, and a couple of transfers restock a secondary losing standouts in safeties Cole Bishop and Sione Vaki. An early showdown at Oklahoma State (Sept. 21) could be a preview of the Big 12 Championship Game.

15. Clemson
Last season’s nine victories marked the first time since 2010 that Clemson failed to reach double-digit wins. However, even though coach Dabo Swinney once again passed on any major additions through the portal, optimism is running high for a return to the ACC Championship Game. The Tigers return only two starters on defense, but this unit is poised to remain among the best in the nation, especially if rising stars like linemen T.J. Parker and Peter Woods and linebacker Sammy Brown develop as expected. But for Clemson to improve, the offense — especially quarterback Cade Klubnik — must take a step forward in coordinator Garrett Riley’s second year. The arrival of freshman receivers T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. should help to spark a unit that managed only 23.6 points per game in ACC contests last season.

16. Oklahoma
A revamped offensive line holds the key to Oklahoma’s debut season in the SEC. Assistant Bill Bedenbaugh is one of the nation’s top line coaches, but the Sooners lost all five starters in the trenches and will be relying on a handful of transfers to quickly mesh. If the offensive line falls into place, Oklahoma’s offense won’t have trouble scoring points behind rising star quarterback Jackson Arnold and a deep group of receivers that includes impact transfer Deion Burks. The Sooners took a big step forward on defense under head coach Brent Venables’ watch last season and should improve once again with six starters back.

17. Kansas State
The Wildcats were just a handful of plays away from something better than 9-4 last season with all four defeats coming by eight points or fewer. A revamped offensive line could be a work in progress early in the year, but head coach Chris Klieman’s team is among the favorites to win the Big 12 with rising star quarterback Avery Johnson and a dynamic backfield headlined by 1,000-yard rusher DJ Giddens. The schedule also breaks in K-State’s favor. Key games versus Oklahoma State and Kansas come at home; a showdown versus new Big 12 foe Arizona is a non-conference matchup; and the Wildcats won’t have to play Utah.

18. Texas A&M
Former Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko returns to College Station after a successful 16-9 stint at Duke the last two years. The Aggies haven’t lacked talent but have struggled to translate that into on-field results. Elko’s blue-collar and no-nonsense approach could quickly change Texas A&M’s outlook in ’24, especially with the return of quarterback Conner Weigman from injury, along with a defensive front that ranks among the best in the SEC. No schedule in the SEC is easy. However, the Aggies get key swing games versus Notre Dame, Missouri, Texas and LSU in College Station.

19. Oklahoma State
What a difference a month can make in the college football season. The Cowboys rallied from a 2-2 start in September to finish with 10 wins and a trip to the Big 12 Championship Game. With 20 starters back, Oklahoma State shouldn’t need a midseason rally to factor into the conference title mix. Running back Ollie Gordon II returns after leading the nation with 1,732 yards and should have plenty of running lanes behind a veteran offensive line. Quarterback Alan Bowman has room to improve but also gives the team a veteran leader to direct the offense. Head coach Mike Gundy also hopes experience (10 returning starters) translates into improvement for a defense that allowed 28.6 points per game last year.

20. Miami
Head coach Mario Cristobal has increased the talent level since arriving prior to the 2022 season, but it’s time for the results to show after a 12-13 start. The Hurricanes appear poised to do so in ’24, as a pair of Pac-12 transfers — quarterback Cameron Ward (Washington State) and running back Damien Martinez (Oregon State) — provide needed firepower on offense. Cristobal’s work on the recruiting trail should give Miami one of the top offensive lines in the nation. The transfer portal also helped to fill a couple of holes on defense, but the secondary remained a concern after spring practice. Key ACC showdowns against Florida State and Virginia Tech take place at home.

21. Kansas
After posting a 2-10 record in head coach Lance Leipold’s Kansas debut in 2021, the Jayhawks have improved their win total in back-to-back seasons. The next logical step? A Big 12 title. That goal is within reach in ’24 thanks to the return of quarterback Jalon Daniels after he missed most of last season with a back injury. Daniels is surrounded by a deep group of playmakers, including 1,000-yard rusher Devin Neal. Improvement on defense is a necessity for Kansas to maximize its potential. The Jayhawks allowed 5.9 yards per play in conference action last season and have holes to fill in the trenches.

22. USC
The Trojans held CFB Playoff aspirations in 2023 but underachieved with an 8-5 record. Shortcomings on defense were largely to blame, and head coach Lincoln Riley made fixing that side of the ball the priority this offseason. New coordinator D’Anton Lynn arrives after leading UCLA’s defense to a No. 2 ranking in the Pac-12 in points allowed. In addition to a revamped defensive staff, the Trojans also added a couple of impact transfers to speed the improvement. New quarterback Miller Moss impressed in his first start in the Holiday Bowl, but USC will have to solidify both lines of scrimmage if it wants to make more noise in its Big Ten debut.

23. Arizona
New head coach Brent Brennan inherits one of the best situations for any first-year coach. The Wildcats return one of college football’s top pass-catch combinations in quarterback Noah Fifita and receiver Tetairoa McMillan to lead an offense that averaged 34.6 points per game last season. Left tackle Jordan Morgan and receiver Jacob Cowing will be missed, however. Improvement on defense was an underrated factor in Arizona’s recent rise. This unit held teams to 21.1 points per game last year — down from 36.5 in ’22. Matching that total will be a challenge with only five starters back for new defensive coordinator Duane Akina.

24. Louisville
After winning 10 games and leading Louisville to an appearance in the ACC Championship Game in his debut, head coach Jeff Brohm faces a high bar in 2024. The Cardinals are primed for a strong encore thanks to a deep haul of transfers that includes quarterback Tyler Shough (Texas Tech), running back Don Chaney (Miami) and receivers Caullin Lacy (South Alabama) and Ja’Corey Brooks (Alabama). End Ashton Gillotte and cornerback Quincy Riley headline nine returning starters from a defense that held teams to 21.3 points per game in ’23. The Cardinals also catch a break by missing Florida State, Virginia Tech and NC State in ACC play. Miami also visits Louisville on Oct. 19.

Related: ACC Coaches Anonymously Scout Conference Opponents for 2024

25. NC State
The Wolfpack have quietly won at least eight games in each of the last four seasons. Head coach Dave Doeren’s squad aims to take the next step by reaching the ACC Championship Game for the first time in program history. That goal is attainable, especially if defensive coordinator Tony Gibson reloads after losing six starters, including All-America linebacker Payton Wilson. The good news is that an offense led by Coastal Carolina transfer quarterback Grayson McCall and dynamic all-around weapon Kevin Concepcion is capable of carrying NC State in the early part of the season.

The Next Tier: West Virginia; Virginia Tech; Iowa; Iowa State; Liberty; SMU; Boise State; Memphis; Nebraska; Wisconsin; Auburn; Florida; Kentucky; Appalachian State; South Carolina

College Football's Post-Spring Top 25 Rankings for 2024

1. Georgia
The return of quarterback Carson Beck and a roster with few concerns puts coach Kirby Smart's team atop the post-spring top 25 for '24. The upcoming schedule this fall is tougher than the one Georgia faced last season, however.

2. Ohio State
Between a few strong portal additions - safety Caleb Downs, running back Quinshon Judkins, and quarterback Will Howard - the Buckeyes seem poised to return to the top of the Big Ten. Also, it doesn't hurt a rebuilding Michigan team visits Columbus in a massive showdown.

3. Oregon
Dan Lanning has the Ducks poised for a deep run in the CFB Playoff. A number of transfers - including quarterback Dillon Gabriel and handful on defense to fill gaps up front and in the secondary - helped to reload a roster that won 12 games last season. A showdown versus Ohio State in Eugene is Oregon's biggest showdown in its debut Big Ten season.

Related: 6 Teams Winning College Football's Spring Transfer Portal

4. Texas
Despite the loss of a couple of key receivers, don't expect coach Steve Sarkisian's offense to take a step back as it enters the SEC. Quarterback Quinn Ewers returns, while a couple of key portal pickups - Silas Bolden, Matthew Golden, and Isaiah Bond - restocked the receiving corps. The defense closed spring with a few remaining question marks up front and in the secondary.

5. Alabama
The Crimson Tide didn't add many big-time pieces in the portal this spring, but the return of quarterback Jalen Milroe in coach Kalen DeBoer's high-powered offense is enough to keep this team in the top-five discussion. Question marks remain about a revamped secondary. However, an addition (or two) could be coming in the portal.

6. Ole Miss
The Rebels are loaded for a run at their first trip to the SEC Championship Game this fall. Quarterback Jaxson Dart and one of the nation's top receiving corps headlines coach Lane Kiffin's offense. The spring additions of Henry Parrish (Miami) and Jacory Croskey-Merritt (New Mexico) restocked a thin backfield after the transfer of Quinshon Judkins to Ohio State. Portal additions - including Texas A&M transfer Walter Nolen up front - should help the Rebels have a much-improved defense in '24.

7. Michigan
The Wolverines lost a ton from their national championship squad, but don't expect a drastic drop in wins for new coach Sherrone Moore. A defense anchored by likely preseason All-Americans in linemen Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant and cornerback Will Johnson ranks among the best in college football. Uncertainty surrounds the quarterback battle after spring practice. Expect the offense to flow through running back Donovan Edwards.

8. Penn State
A favorable schedule and a standout defense should carry the Nittany Lions into the top-10 mix. But for coach James Franklin's squad to push for a spot in the Big Ten title game, quarterback Drew Allar needs to take a step forward under new coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. Also, concerns remain at receiver after the spring departure of Keandre Lambert-Smith.

Related: Ranking Big Ten Coaches for 2024

9. Missouri
The Tigers lost a chunk of talent off last year's standout defense, and coordinator Blake Baker left Columbia to be the play-caller at LSU. Despite those challenges, Missouri is poised for a playoff push behind an offense returning quarterback Brady Cook and dynamic receiver Luther Burden III.

10. Notre Dame
A defense returning likely preseason All-Americans in lineman Howard Cross III, cornerback Benjamin Morrison, and safety Xavier Watts is firmly in the conversation to be one of the best in college football. Mike Denbrock returns to South Bend as offensive coordinator after guiding the nation's No. 1 attack at LSU in '23. The Fighting Irish have concerns up front after losing tackles Joe Alt and Blake Fisher. However, transfer quarterback Riley Leonard (Duke), a deep stable of running backs, and a couple of receiver adds from the portal should give Denbrock plenty to work with this fall.

11. LSU
The cupboard isn't bare on LSU's offense despite the loss of quarterback Jayden Daniels and receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas. New play-caller Joe Sloan can build the next high-powered attack around new QB Garrett Nussmeier and a solid group of wideouts that includes Liberty transfer CJ Daniels and returning options in Kyren Lacy, Aaron Anderson, and Chris Hilton. The Tigers also bring back four starters in the trenches to form one of the best offensive lines in the nation. New defensive coordinator Blake Baker was hired away from Missouri to improve a unit that struggled mightily last season. The coaching changes should help. But LSU still has concerns up front and in the secondary.

12. Florida State
The Seminoles lost a handful of key performers from last year's 13-1 squad, but coach Mike Norvell reloaded once again from the transfer portal. Former Clemson/Oregon State signal-caller DJ Uiagalelei will handle the QB duties, with a handful of intriguing skill players and an experienced offensive line supporting the veteran quarterback. Just four starters are back on defense. However, coordinator Adam Fuller has a good foundation to build around, including a line that features end Patrick Payton and tackle Joshua Farmer.

13. Tennessee
A high-powered offense led by rising star quarterback Nico Iamaleava should be able to carry the Volunteers into contention for a playoff spot. However, a defense that allowed 5.83 yards a snap in SEC play last season enters '24 with concerns. Improving a revamped secondary remains the top priority for coordinator Tim Banks.

14. Clemson
Is the combination of another offseason of development from coordinator Garrett Riley and a couple of freshmen additions at receiver enough to help quarterback Cade Klubnik elevate his game into one of the best in the ACC? If so, the Tigers could return to the top of the conference. Until the offense finds its footing, coach Dabo Swinney's team can lean on another talented defense.

15. Utah
The top of the new 16-team Big 12 is crowded, but the Utes get the early advantage after spring ball. Quarterback Cameron Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe are back after missing all of '23 due to injury to spark the offense. As always, Utah will be strong on defense under coordinator Morgan Scalley and coach Kyle Whittingham.

16. Oklahoma
The Sooners took a step forward in coach Brent Venables' second season with a 10-3 mark. However, things won't get any easier with a move to the SEC on tap for '24. In addition to the tougher schedule, Oklahoma is breaking in five new starters on the offensive line. A couple of transfer additions help boost this unit, but new quarterback (and rising star) Jackson Arnold could have his hands full early in SEC play. The defense got a huge pickup in the spring transfer window with TCU defensive lineman Damonic Williams committing to the Sooners.

17. Kansas State
Rising star quarterback Avery Johnson leads an offense that also features a prolific one-two punch at running back with Colorado transfer Dylan Edwards and DJ Giddens. Replacing three starters in the trenches - including All-American Cooper Beebe - is the biggest concern this offseason. K-State's defense returns seven starters and should be one of the better units in the Big 12.

Related: Big 12's 15 Must-See Games in 2024

18. Oklahoma State
With 20 starters back, coach Mike Gundy's team is one of the most experienced squads in '24. Running back Ollie Gordon II returns to headline the offense, but this unit needs more consistency from quarterback Alan Bowman to return to the Big 12 title game. There's also room to improve on a defense that allowed 28.6 points per contest last year.

19. Miami
Are the Hurricanes poised for a breakthrough third year under coach Mario Cristobal? The pieces are in place offensively thanks to the addition of quarterback Cam Ward (Washington State) and running back Damien Martinez (Oregon State) from the portal. Miami's defense should be solid up front. However, question marks remain in a thin secondary.

20. Arizona
New coach Brent Brennan should get his tenure in Tucson off to a fast start thanks to the return of quarterback Noah Fifita and receiver Tetairoa McMillan. Scoring points shouldn't be a problem for the Wildcats, but there are question marks on defense after the loss of tackles Tiaoalii Savea and Bill Norton, along with cornerback Ephesians Prysock.

21. Kansas
Quarterback Jalon Daniels returns after missing nearly all of 2023 with a back injury to go with a loaded set of skill players to form one of the Big 12's top offenses. The Jayhawks are getting better on defense and return two of the conference's top cornerbacks in Mello Dotson and Cobee Bryant. Improvement up front in the defensive trenches could decide whether or not Kansas can make a run at the conference title.

22. Texas A&M
Roster talent isn't lacking in College Station, but new coach Mike Elko must do a better job of maximizing the personnel than former coach Jimbo Fisher did over the last few years. Headlining Elko's first team is a breakout candidate at quarterback in Conner Weigman, along with a defense that could rank among the best in the SEC if Purdue transfer Nic Scourton and Shemar Turner dominate in the trenches.

23. USC
For USC's Big Ten debut to be a success, a revamped defense under new coordinator D'Anton Lynn needs to show improvement and coach Lincoln Riley must reload his high-powered offense. New quarterback Miller Moss was impressive in the bowl win over Louisville. However, a rebuilt offensive line remains a question mark.

24. NC State
Transfer quarterback Grayson McCall leads the way for an intriguing Wolfpack offense that also includes a much-improved group of receivers. Coordinator Tony Gibson must replace standout linebacker Payton Wilson and fill a few voids up front and in the secondary. However, Gibson should find a way to keep this defense near the top of the ACC.

25. Louisville
A repeat trip to the ACC Championship Game is within reach for coach Jeff Brohm's team. Anchored by standouts in cornerback Quincy Riley and lineman Ashton Gillotte, the defense should be one of the best in the conference. The Cardinals have plenty of firepower at the skill spots. However, transfer quarterback Tyler Shough needs to stay healthy after struggling with injuries at Texas Tech.

College Football's Top 25 Rankings After National Signing Day

1. Georgia
Quarterback Carson Beck's return solidifies Georgia's place atop the rankings in the way-too-early top 25 for '24. Although tight end Brock Bowers will be missed, coach Kirby Smart reloaded the skill spots through the portal with the arrival of running back Trevor Etienne (Florida), tight end Ben Yurosek (Stanford), and receivers Colbie Young (Miami) and London Humphreys (Vanderbilt). Smart has a few voids to fill on defense, but this unit is loaded with talent and potential at all three levels.

2. Ohio State
The Buckeyes are having a strong offseason thanks to the arrival of a couple of key transfers, including running back Quinshon Judkins (Ole Miss), quarterbacks Will Howard (Kansas State) and Julian Sayin (Alabama) and standout safety Caleb Downs (Alabama). With the turnover in Ann Arbor, Ohio State is the early favorite to win the Big Ten in '24.

3. Texas
The Longhorns enter the SEC with momentum after last year's trip to the CFB Playoff. Quarterback Quinn Ewers returns to lead coach Steve Sarkisian's high-powered offense, with the offensive line ranking among the best in college football for '24. Transfers Matthew Golden (Houston), Silas Bolden (Oregon State), and Isaiah Bond (Alabama) restock a receiving corps losing Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell. Sarkisian's biggest concerns are on the defensive side after losing linemen T'Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy II and linebacker Jaylan Ford.

4. Oregon
The Ducks are a big winner (so far) in college football's offseason. Alabama wasn't able to lure Dan Lanning away from Eugene, coordinators Will Stein (offense) and Chris Hampton (defense) are back for '24, and the staff landed a standout recruiting class to go with a handful of impact transfers. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel should be one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy this fall.

5. Alabama
It's no secret new coach Kalen DeBoer has big shoes to fill in replacing Nick Saban. However, the roster isn't lacking talent, and DeBoer has already landed a couple of players from the portal to help right away. How quarterback Jalen Milroe develops under DeBoer and coordinator Ryan Grubb could decide how deep of a CFB Playoff run this team can make in '24.

Related: Way-Too-Early Over/Under Win Total Projections for the SEC

6. Ole Miss
Expectations of a CFB Playoff run haven't changed since the first top 25 release in early January. The Rebels bring back quarterback Jaxson Dart to pilot one of the nation's top offenses. However, the departure of running back Quinshon Judkins to Ohio State is a big loss. Coach Lane Kiffin has fortified several of the team's question marks through the portal, including a couple of pickups on the offensive line and on defense.

7. Michigan
With Jim Harbaugh off to the NFL, along with a lengthy list of high-profile departures to the next level as well, the Wolverines fall from No. 4 to No. 7 in our post-Signing Day top 25. New coach Sherrone Moore didn't lose any major contributors to the portal and retained running back Donovan Edwards and a couple of key defenders - safeties Rod Moore and Makari Paige and edge rusher Josaiah Stewart - at the draft deadline.

8. Penn State
There have been plenty of changes at Penn State since our first top 25 was released in early January, but coach James Franklin's team remains at No. 9 in the rankings. It's a crucial offseason for quarterback Drew Allar under new play-caller Andy Kotelnicki. The addition of Ohio State transfer Julian Fleming is a big get for a receiving corps in need of playmakers.

9. Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish were able to retain a couple of key pieces - safety Xavier Watts and lineman Howard Cross III - at the draft deadline to maintain one of the nation's top defenses for '24. Contending for a spot in the CFB Playoff will hinge on how the offense develops behind new coordinator Mike Denbrock and transfer quarterback Riley Leonard.

10. Missouri
Quarterback Brady Cook and receiver Luther Burden III are back to lead Missouri's high-powered offense, but this unit will miss running back Cody Schrader. The rebuilding effort on defense is crucial this spring with new coordinator Corey Batoon breaking in several new starters at all three levels.

11. Tennessee
If quarterback Nico Iamaleava lives up to the hype, the Volunteers have the schedule and offense to make a run at the CFB Playoff. Will the defense improve after allowing 27.6 points a contest in SEC play last season?

Related: Way-Too-Early Over/Under Win Total Projections for the SEC

12. LSU
Quarterback Jayden Daniels and receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas are big losses, but LSU's offense can still maintain its place near the top of the SEC with new signal-caller Garrett Nussmeier at the controls. Coach Brian Kelly took big steps this offseason to fix a struggling defense by hiring coordinator Blake Baker away from Missouri.

13. Utah
The return of quarterback Cam Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe is a huge boost for Utah as it enters the Big 12. And as always, expect coach Kyle Whittingham and coordinator Morgan Scalley to keep the defense among the best in college football. Restocking the cornerback spot and replacing lineman Jonah Elliss and safeties Cole Bishop and Sione Vaki top the list of spring priorities for the defense.

Related: Early Big 12 Power Rankings for 2024

14. Oklahoma
New quarterback Jackson Arnold is among college football's top rising stars for the '24 season. However, while Arnold and the skill talent is promising, the Sooners have a completely revamped offensive line to navigate in '24. Can coach Brent Venables also generate another round of improvement from the defense?

15. Florida State
The Seminoles are losing a ton of talent off last year's 13-win squad, but coach Mike Norvell added one of the best transfer classes in the nation to quickly reload in '24. Former Clemson and Oregon State signal-caller DJ Uiagalelei was a key get from the portal to bridge the gap to the team's younger quarterbacks. Despite losing end Jared Verse, the defensive front should be formidable with Patrick Payton, Darrell Jackson, and Oregon State transfer Sione Lolohea.

16. Clemson
A defense that held opponents to 21.1 points a game in '23 should remain a strength with linebacker Barrett Carter and linemen Peter Woods and T.J. Parker anchoring this group. However, returning to the top of the ACC is dependent on the offense taking a step forward in the second year under coordinator Garrett Riley. The Tigers averaged only 23.6 points a game in ACC contests last fall.

17. Arizona
Brent Brennan is stepping into one of the best situations for a first-year coach. The Wildcats are coming off a 10-3 record in '23 and held onto quarterback Noah Fifita and receiver Tetairoa McMillan after the departure of former coach Jedd Fisch to Washington. Coaching transition isn't easy, but Arizona is built to win in '24.

18. Kansas State
The combination of quarterback Avery Johnson and running back DJ Giddens (1,226 yards) will be a nightmare for Big 12 defensive coordinators in '24. Replacing standout lineman Cooper Beebe tops the list of offseason priorities for coach Chris Klieman. The defense must replace end Nate Matlack, safety Kobe Savage and cornerback Will Lee. However, linebacker Austin Moore (12.5 TFL) is back for his super senior year.

Related: College Football's Top Impact Freshmen for 2024

19. Oklahoma State
The Cowboys return the bulk of the roster that appeared in the Big 12 Championship Game in '23 and should be one of the favorites to win the conference this fall. Included in the list of proven returners is running back Ollie Gordon II, quarterback Alan Bowman, receiver Brennan Presley, and linebacker Nickolas Martin.

20. USC
After back-to-back seasons of poor defensive play, coach Lincoln Riley overhauled the staff in an effort to get this unit on track as USC enters the Big Ten. New coordinator D'Anton Lynn arrives after a successful '23 season at UCLA, while Eric Henderson (Rams) and Matt Entz (North Dakota State) are two of the better assistant pickups in this coaching carousel. Riley's track record suggests scoring points won't be a problem once again. However, this unit enters '24 with question marks up front and at quarterback.

21. Louisville
After a 10-win season and a trip to the ACC title game in coach Jeff Brohm's debut, expectations are high for the Cardinals going into '24. With one of the nation's top transfer hauls on the way - which includes likely starting quarterback Tyler Shough and help at every position - Brohm's team has the pieces to win the conference. Lineman Ashton Gillotte and defensive back Quincy Riley passing on the NFL for another season at Louisville was another huge offseason victory.

22. Kansas
With quarterback Jalon Daniels back after missing nearly all of '23 due to a back injury, Kansas should be among the frontrunners to win a wide-open Big 12. New co-coordinators Jeff Grimes and Jim Zebrowski have plenty of skill talent to deploy, including running back Devin Neal. Restocking the offensive line and improving the defense top the offseason priorities for coach Lance Leipold.

23. Texas A&M
New coach Mike Elko quickly addressed some of Texas A&M's biggest concerns with a deep haul of transfers that includes help on both sides of the ball. The Aggies have a favorable schedule in Elko's debut and also return quarterback Conner Weigman after a season-ending injury in '23.

24. Iowa
Even though cornerback Cooper DeJean is off to the NFL, Iowa's defense will remain among the best in the nation with coordinator Phil Parker in control. However, question marks still remain about the Hawkeyes' offense under new coordinator Tim Lester. Can this group take a step forward with Lester's play-calling and the return of quarterback Cade McNamara from injury?

25. NC State
The Wolfpack lose All-American linebacker Payton Wilson and cornerback Shyheim Battle from one of the ACC's top defenses, but coordinator Tony Gibson should find a way to keep this unit near the top of the conference. Coastal Carolina transfer quarterback Grayson McCall should be an excellent fit for coordinator Robert Anae's scheme. This unit will also benefit from the continued development of dynamic all-around playmaker Kevin Concepcion.

Up Next: Miami, Liberty, Iowa State, SMU, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Washington

College Football's Way-Too-Early Top 25 for 2024

1. Georgia
The Bulldogs fell short in their quest for a three-peat national championship run thanks to a loss in the SEC Championship to Alabama. The '24 season could be a revenge tour of sorts as coach Kirby Smart's team looks to get back to the top of college football with a difficult slate that includes road trips to play Alabama, Ole Miss, and Texas. Quarterback Carson Beck returns after a standout debut, and the Bulldogs reloaded the supporting cast through the portal with key additions in running back Trevor Etienne (Florida) and at receiver with Colbie Young (Miami) and London Humphreys (Vanderbilt). Smart has a few holes to fill on defense, but as usual, this group will rank among the best in the nation.

2. Alabama
Quarterback Jalen Milroe returns after a breakout season, and as usual, talent isn't in short supply elsewhere on the roster in Tuscaloosa. Rising star Justice Haynes should get an extended look at running back in '24, while improvement is needed at receiver and up front for the offense to reach its full potential. Alabama's defense has holes to fill after losing linebacker Dallas Turner and cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold early to the NFL Draft. However, help is on the way from the portal in the form of lineman LT Overton (Texas A&M) and cornerback Domani Jackson (USC). Also, safety Caleb Downs is back after a standout freshman campaign.

Related: Early SEC Predictions for 2024

3. Texas
The Longhorns are positioned well to navigate their debut season in the SEC in '24. Whether it's Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning at quarterback, Texas will have one of the conference's top offenses. Jonathon Brooks is off to the NFL, but Cedric Baxter and Jaydon Blue return to anchor the backfield. Houston transfer Matthew Golden and Johntay Cook II (and potentially Adonai Mitchell) round out the key contributors at receiver to go along with a standout offensive line. Coach Steve Sarkisian has some retooling to do at every level on defense. However, top-notch recruiting from the high school or transfer ranks (Clemson safety Andrew Mukuba added for '24) should prevent a major drop in production here.

4. Michigan
The Wolverines are going to lose a ton of key contributors from the '23 team and coach Jim Harbaugh could take a job in the NFL. But for now, Michigan ranks high on this list for the potential of quarterback J.J. McCarthy returning, as well as a defense that features elite cornerback Will Johnson and standout linemen Kenneth Grant, Derrick Moore, and Mason Graham.

5. Ohio State
The Buckeyes head into '24 with more offensive uncertainty than usual under coach Ryan Day. Despite losing Marvin Harrison Jr. to the NFL, Ohio State's receiving corps is still loaded with talent. However, uncertainty surrounds a quarterback battle that features Kansas State transfer Will Howard, Devin Brown and freshmen Air Noland and Lincoln Kienholz. Additionally, the offensive line has to take a big step forward for Day's team to return to the top of the Big Ten. Ohio State's defense allowed only 11.2 points a game in '23 and should be strong once again with linemen Jack Sawyer and Tyleik Williams anchoring this group.

6. Oregon
The Ducks have all of the pieces in place to win big in their Big Ten debut. Oklahoma transfer Dillon Gabriel should ensure a smooth transition from Bo Nix at quarterback, and coordinator Will Stein received good news when receiver Tez Johnson passed on the NFL for another season in Eugene. Running back Bucky Irving will be missed, but Jordan James and Noah Whittington is a potent one-two punch in the backfield. Also, the offensive line should be among the best in college football. Coach Dan Lanning's defense needs to plug a few holes on defense, but linebacker Jeffrey Bassa passed on the NFL for another season in college, and Jahlil Florence is a rising star at cornerback.

7. Ole Miss
Running back Quinshon Judkins' decision to enter the transfer portal is a setback, but Ole Miss is still primed for a run at the 12-team CFB Playoff in '24. Quarterback Jaxson Dart headlines an offense that averaged 35.1 points a game and is also slated to return No. 1 receiver Tre Harris (985 receiving yards in '23) and adds South Carolina transfer Juice Wells. A much-improved defense is likely coming to Oxford next year, as coach Lane Kiffin has assembled a standout haul of transfers that includes lineman Walter Nolen (Texas A&M) and linebacker Chris Paul Jr. (Arkansas).

8. Missouri
The Tigers are coming off their best season (11-2) since an 11-win campaign in '14. Coach Eli Drinkwitz's squad lost a few key contributors after the Cotton Bowl - namely running back Cody Schrader, tackle Javon Foster, cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine, linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper, and defensive end Darius Robinson - but don't expect Missouri to slip too much in the preseason rankings. Quarterback Brady Cook and receivers Luther Burden III and Theo Wease are back and additional help to restock the depth chart is on the way from the recruiting trail and transfer portal.

Related: College Football Players in the 2023-24 Transfer Portal

9. Penn State
The Nittany Lions have won double-digit games five times since '16 but have yet to earn a CFB Playoff trip. The expanded 12-team version should help Penn State reach that goal in '24, and coach James Franklin's squad could climb higher on this list if quarterback Drew Allar takes a step forward in his development under new play-caller Andy Kotelnicki (former Kansas offensive coordinator). Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen are back as a standout duo in the backfield. Replacing left tackle Olu Fashanu and developing difference makers at receiver is a priority for this offense to take off in '24. New defensive coordinator Tom Allen inherits a unit that limited teams to 13.5 points a game last year. There are holes to fill up front and in the secondary, but the Nittany Lions should still be strong on this side of the ball.

10. Notre Dame
New additions to the coaching staff and from the transfer portal should help the Fighting Irish contend for a CFB Playoff spot in '24. Coach Marcus Freeman's ability to land Mike Denbrock as offensive coordinator from LSU was a big-time move, especially as the team looks to break in another transfer (Riley Leonard from Duke) at quarterback to go with a revamped receiving corps. Replacing standout tackles Joe Alt and Blake Fisher won't be easy. A defense that limited opponents to 15.9 points a contest won the offseason thanks to the return of safety Xavier Watts and lineman Howard Cross III for another year.

11. Tennessee
If you are looking for one of 2024's top breakout players, look no further than Knoxville with former five-star prospect Nico Iamaleava taking over at quarterback for Joe Milton. Iamaleava had an impressive debut in the Citrus Bowl win over Iowa, which only increased the hype and anticipation on his '24 season. The California native is supported by an offensive line that will largely return intact, as well as a solid cast of skill players that includes running backs Dylan Sampson and Cameron Seldon and receivers Bru McCoy and Chris Brazzell II (Tulane transfer). Tennessee's defense has made progress in recent seasons under coordinator Tim Banks, but this unit still has room to improve after giving up 5.83 yards per play in SEC contests in '23. Edge rusher James Pearce is one of the SEC's top returning defenders.

Related: Four QBs Primed for Stardom in 2024 After Breakout Bowl Games

12. Oklahoma
After a four-game jump in wins from coach Brent Venables debut ('22) to '23, the Sooners are equipped to handle the big transition to the SEC next fall. Rising star quarterback Jackson Arnold flashed potential in a start in the Alamo Bowl and will benefit from a full offseason to work as the No. 1 option. With plenty of options at running back and receiver, the biggest concern for new play-caller Seth Littrell is a completely revamped offensive line. Oklahoma's defense held opponents to 23.5 points a game last year - down from 30 a contest in '22. The return of linebacker Danny Stutsman is a huge lift for this group as it looks to improve again in '24.

13. Clemson
With Florida State losing a big chunk of talent from the ACC Championship team from '23, coach Dabo Swinney's Tigers are likely to open '24 as the favorite to win the conference. After averaging only 23.6 points a contest in ACC play, Swinney hopes another offseason for quarterback Cade Klubnik under coordinator Garrett Riley will help to elevate the entire production of this group. Helping to ease the pressure on a developing offense is another standout defense in Death Valley. Linemen Peter Woods and TJ Parker and linebackers Wade Woodaz and Barrett Carter headline the top returners next season.

14. LSU
Fixing a struggling defense was the top offseason priority in Baton Rouge, and coach Brian Kelly wasted no time in dismissing four members of his staff shortly after LSU's bowl game. The Bayou Bengals aren't hurting for talent in the front seven, but the secondary has experienced its share of turnover and injuries in recent years. If Kelly can find the right mix on the staff and address some of the needs in the portal, then LSU can push once again for a top-10 finish. Quarterback Jayden Daniels and receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas leave big shoes to fill, but the offense should still be prolific behind a standout offensive line and new signal-caller Garrett Nussmeier.

Related: Early SEC Predictions for 2024

15. Utah
The return of quarterback Cam Rising after missing all of the '23 season due to injury puts Utah at (or near) the top of the list of favorites in the new Big 12 next fall. Rising wasn't the only player that missed significant time for the Utes last year and those ailments certainly played a role in coach Kyle Whittingham's team dipping to 8-5 after beginning '23 with Pac-12 title aspirations. Some improvement should be anticipated from an offensive line that returns mostly intact, and the defense is always a strength in Salt Lake City.

16. Arizona
The Wildcats were one of college football's biggest surprises in '23. After winning just six games in coach Jedd Fisch's first two years, Arizona jumped to 10-3 and nearly earned an appearance in the Pac-12 title game with a 7-2 mark in league play. The emergence of quarterback Noah Fifita (2,869 yards and 25 TDs) and the passing game with Tetairoa McMillan and Jacob Cowing on the other end was a big reason for the breakout year. Also, the Wildcats improved significantly on defense. After giving up 36.5 points a game in '22, this unit allowed only 21.1 last year. With the bulk of the defense slated to return, another step forward is within reach.

17. Florida State
2024 is likely to be a rebuilding year for coach Mike Norvell, but the 'Noles aren't going to completely disappear from the ACC Championship or CFB Playoff race. Landing Oregon State and Clemson transfer DJ Uiagalelei to start at quarterback was a good bridge option to the team's younger signal-callers. A couple of portal additions are needed to restock depth at running back and receiver, but the 'Noles should have one of the better lines in the ACC next fall. Patrick Payton, Darrell Jackson, and Joshua Farmer headline the list of key players returning in the trenches, while coordinator Adam Fuller has work to do to restock at linebacker and in the secondary.

18. Washington
The Huskies are set to lose several key pieces off the '23 team that played for the national championship, including quarterback Michael Penix Jr., receiver Rome Odunze, and a couple of key cogs on defense. However, expect coach Kalen DeBoer to reload and find a way to keep this team in the playoff mix. Mississippi State transfer Will Rogers is expected to replace Penix under center, and California transfer Jeremiah Hunter should fill the void at receiver. The Huskies will return one of the Big Ten's top offensive lines. Improving the defense is a priority this offseason, with the overall picture of returning personnel and strengths likely to clear after the national championship and some portal additions.

19. Kansas State
Coach Chris Klieman must replace a couple of members (including star guard Cooper Beebe) from K-State's outstanding offensive line - next fall. However, the excitement level about the Wildcats' offense next year is running high, as rising star quarterback Avery Johnson takes over and promising weapons in running back DJ Giddens and receiver Jayce Brown return. A defense that held opponents to 21 points a game in '23 has some retooling to do. However, K-State's schedule is very favorable with Arizona, Kansas, and Oklahoma State all coming to Manhattan.

20. USC
Expectations at USC in '24 will be drastically different than the ones that placed coach Lincoln Riley's team in the mix for a playoff spot last year. With quarterback Caleb Williams off to the NFL and question marks about a porous defense, the Trojans will be picked in the middle of the Big Ten. New projected starter Miller Moss had a strong showing in the Holiday Bowl to give Riley confidence about his quarterback room for '24. Also, Riley's track record suggests the offense won't be too big of an issue - even if it isn't as productive as the last two seasons. For USC to surprise in its Big Ten debut, the defense must show marked improvement under new coordinator D'Anton Lynn. The Trojans have a handful of key portal additions on the way to help this side of the ball, but it may take some time for the scheme and talent to mesh to generate improvement.

21. Kansas
The Jayhawks took another step forward under coach Lance Leipold with a 9-4 record in '23. That mark is even more impressive when you consider starting quarterback Jalon Daniels missed nearly all of the season due to injury. Daniels is back for '24 and is among the nation's top returning quarterbacks. New play-caller Jim Zebrowski has some retooling to do in the trenches, but running back Devin Neal (1,280 yards) and the top contributors at receiver are back. Kansas is making steady progress in fixing a porous defense in recent years. The good news for Leipold: The bulk of the two-deep is returning and another step forward should be expected in '24.

22. Oklahoma State
The Cowboys rallied from a 2-2 start to a trip to the Big 12 title game in 2023. Coach Mike Gundy's squad is arguably in better shape for '24, as quarterback Alan Bowman will return after he was granted an additional year of eligibility, and standout running back Ollie Gordon II (1,732 rushing yards) is also back. The offensive line is slated to return intact, and No. 1 receiver Brennan Presley (101 catches) passed on the NFL for another season in Stillwater. The Cowboys have room to improve on defense (28.6 points a game allowed in '23), but the bulk of the lineup is slated to suit up again in '24.

23. Louisville
A favorable schedule and the arrival of new coach Jeff Brohm helped to propel Louisville to its first appearance in the ACC Championship and the program's first double-digit win season since '13. The Cardinals have one of the top portal hauls in the nation joining in time for '24, which includes quarterback Tyler Shough (Texas Tech), receivers Ja'Corey Brooks (Alabama) and Caullin Lacy (South Alabama), and running back Don Chaney (Miami). The defense allowed only 21.3 points a game last year and will return standout lineman Ashton Gillotte (14.5 TFL) after he passed on the NFL Draft to return to Louisville.

24. Iowa
Despite losing cornerback Cooper DeJean, don't expect coordinator Phil Parker's defense to miss a beat in '24. This unit also received good news after the regular season when linebacker Jay Higgins and cornerback Jermari Harris opted to return next fall. The Hawkeyes should be able to lean on this group until the offense finds its footing under a new coordinator. Also, in addition to deploying a better scheme and play-caller, the offense will benefit from the return of quarterback Cade McNamara and tight end Luke Lachey from season-ending injuries.

25. NC State
Coach Dave Doeren has been a model of consistency in Raleigh with six seasons of eight or nine victories over the last nine years. Replacing the production and leadership of linebacker Payton Wilson isn't going to be easy. However, the Wolfpack landed one of the top quarterbacks in the portal (Grayson McCall) and return rising star receiver Kevin Concepcion after a standout freshman season.

The Next Six

26. Miami
If the 'Canes can find a quarterback to work behind a standout offensive line, then coach Mario Cristobal's team should be able to push for a finish in the top 25. Receiver Xavier Restrepo opted to return instead of declare for the NFL Draft, and the defense is anchored by rising star end Rueben Bain and linebacker Francisco Mauigoa.

27. Texas A&M
New coach Mike Elko should do a better job of getting the most out of Texas A&M's roster than Jimbo Fisher did over the last couple of seasons. Look for quarterback Conner Weigman to thrive under new play-caller Collin Klein. If the pieces fall into place, the Aggies should finish '24 in the top 25.

28. Liberty
Quarterback Kaidon Salter's decision to exit the transfer portal and return to Liberty should push this team closer to the top 25. The Flames should be a heavy favorite to win Conference USA in '24 and could be the top Group of 5 team in the mix to make the CFB Playoff.

29. Virginia Tech
The Hokies surged at the end of the '23 season with a 5-2 mark over their final seven games. With nearly everyone back and an offseason to develop around quarterback Kyron Drones, coach Brent Pry's squad should get preseason top 25 consideration.

30. SMU
The schedule is tougher with the Mustangs on the move from the American to the ACC. However, coach Rhett Lashlee's squad should be in the mix for a top-25 finish, especially with quarterback Preston Stone returning to full strength after suffering from a season-ending leg injury late in the '23 campaign.

31. West Virginia
Neal Brown entered '23 on one of the hottest seats in the nation but proceeded to direct the Mountaineers to a solid 9-4 season. Quarterback Garrett Greene and running backs Jahiem White and CJ Donaldson lead an intriguing West Virginia team for '24.

The Next Tier

Appalachian State
The Mountaineers return the bulk of their starting two-deep and should be the early favorite to win the Sun Belt in '24.

Auburn
Provided quarterback play is better, the Tigers should improve in coach Hugh Freeze's second year.

Boise State
After a strong finish as the team's interim coach and a Mountain West title victory over UNLV, Spencer Danielson will get his chance to put his stamp on the program as the full-time coach. Running back Ashton Jeanty is one of the best in college football.

Iowa State
The Cyclones return most of their roster in '24, including quarterback Rocco Becht, receiver Jayden Higgins, and running back Abu Sama.

Memphis
The Tigers can make a run at the top spot among Group of 5 programs with quarterback Seth Henigan returning in '24.

Texas Tech/TCU
Don't be surprised if the Red Raiders or Horned Frogs emerges as a contender in the Big 12.

Tulane
Quarterback Michael Pratt must be replaced, but new coach Jon Sumrall inherits a strong foundation from a program that went 23-5 over the last two years.

UCLA
Not only are the Bruins transitioning to the Big Ten with a question mark at quarterback, coach Chip Kelly's squad must replace defensive standouts off the edge in Laiatu Latu, Gabriel Murphy, and Grayson Murphy.

Wisconsin
How big of a jump will the Badgers make in their second year under coach Luke Fickell?
