College football Week 6: What we learned

The leaves are changing colors and we are getting close to the middle of the college football season. What is not changing are the teams at the top of the pecking order of the sport, at least not yet.

What we are seeing are teams like USC, UCLA, and Tennessee inching up in status. With each week and each win, there are fewer and fewer undefeated teams but those three are still among them (for now).

One thing of note is that each league that has an undefeated team, has at least two teams that have yet to lose. The SEC still has four undefeated teams, the Big Ten has three, while the ACC, Big 12, Pac-12, and Sun Belt, yes the Sun Belt, have two.

Those numbers are going to drop this week for sure, and how they do will teach us a couple of things. Let's have a look at what we learned from last week though.

Week 6 - What We Learned

L.A. — Best Football Town in America!!

It is hard to argue against that right now with both UCLA and USC a perfect 12-0 combined. UCLA was the more impressive of the two this week as they not only beat Utah but pulled away late in the game. USC has the Utes next on the road and they are going to be getting an ornery opponent that has had their number in the past. I thought UCLA would fall to Utah. They now have a couple of weeks to get ready for their next big game, at Oregon.

Betting Takeaway: USC and UCLA are a combined 8-4 ATS so even though they are public schools they are still exceeding expectations. There is no reason for that not to continue even though we have not seen it from the Bruins and Trojans for a while.

Tennessee For Real

If you read the Top 25 Betting Guide you know I was hot on Tennessee winning at LSU as a small favorite this past week. I did not expect that they would have the game wrapped up by halftime though. This team is going to have a major impact on the SEC this season and their next big game is this week against Alabama. They are undefeated and have looked awesome.

Betting Takeaway: This is a Top 10 team that is going to be an underdog at home this week and at Georgia in a few. Those are betting opportunities, one way or another. Don't assume they are going to be put in their place.

Mid Week is More than MACtion

There were five games prior to Saturday this week and three of the five finished within three points. Two of those games were won by a point by the visitors in situations where they had to come back, too. The MAC is known for its midweek games but other leagues, including the Big Ten, are getting in on the act too. The best games are always going to be on Saturday, but as bettors we want to make money all week long.

Betting Takeaway: After MNF, don't pack up your supplies until the weekend. There are another five games before Saturday this week.

Hurrican(es) More Like Hurrican't

I really wanted to believe Miami was on its way "back" this season, because the sport is so much better with their swagger. However, that is now three straight losses for the Hurricanes after losing to North Carolina this past weekend. They have just one ATS win this season, too. They might go into Clemson at the end of the year and beat the Tigers but for right now they are way too inconsistent.

Betting Takeaway: This is one team you have to stay away from. If you think you have them figured out, you don't.

UConn Doormat No More

I truly didn't know what Jim Mora Jr. was thinking when he took the Connecticut job. The Huskies are just 3-4, but those three wins match their win total for their last three seasons combined so Mora is doing something right in Storrs. Better still they are 5-2 ATS, including covering a couple of games where they were actually favored. They have a few more winnable games on the schedule too. There is a very reasonable chance that UConn is bowl eligible.

Betting Takeaway: The Huskies are making money, and that is all that matters so don't forget about them.
