ESPN's "College GameDay" aired live from Norman, Oklahoma, on Saturday morning ahead of the top-20 matchup between the No. 15 Michigan Wolverines and the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners.
Meanwhile, Arch Manning and Oklahoma’s archrival, the No. 7 Texas Longhorns, look to rebound from their season-opening loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes when they face the San Jose State Spartans.
Anticipation was sky-high in Week 1 to see another quarterback named Manning take the field. The 21-year-old entered the season as a Heisman contender, but in his first game as Texas’ full-time starter, he struggled. In the 14–7 loss, the redshirt sophomore completed 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
During Saturday's "College GameDay" episode, Oklahoma fans let Manning hear it with one word after panelist Kirk Herbstreit brought up his performance and the reaction to it.
"Overrated," the Sooner fans shouted in the background.
Herbstreit mentioned the year 2025 and how social media plays a big role in everyone's lives. He asked fellow panelist and retired Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban if he would talk to his players about that.
"The psychological aspect of being a head coach. Before week one, Arch Manning's gonna win the Heisman — best quarterback in the history of football," Herbstreit said. "After week one, he's the worst quarterback I've ever seen. ... Not just that, there's so many examples of it. It's up, it's down, it's up ... The coaches that you know of, do they deal with that aspect of the game?"
"I know it's XO's and getting guys in the right spot, but do you have to in 2025 with social media and the up and down and how they react. Do you pull guys in and talk to them about that?
Saban said, "Absolutely. You know, I think psychological disposition between how hungry are you, versus how much anxiety are you creating for yourself," Saban said. "That all affects your performance, so not to acknowledge that and to ignore that, I think is a huge mistake."
