After his son Shedeur Sanders emerged as one of the best quarterbacks in college football over the past two years, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is now trying to fill the void left by the 2024 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
The Buffs (1-2) brought in Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter, who started the first two games, but lost his starting role following the team's 31-7 Week 2 win against Delaware. In an odd experiment, Sanders opted to play three quarterbacks, with third-stringer Ryan Staub standing out the most.
Sanders was then noncommittal when it came to naming a starter for the team's Week 3 game against Houston, before giving Staub the nod. Unfortunately for Staub, he was unable to recreate his magical two-touchdown showing from the week prior, and the Buffs lost 36-20 to Houston.
When speaking to the media on Tuesday, Sanders was asked if he made a decision, and while he did answer, he didn't elaborate beyond that.
"Yeah, most definitely I have," Sanders said.
Sanders did add that he wants to see leadership and consistency from whoever is behind center.
Following Friday's loss, it was evident that Sanders was disappointed in Staub.
“Staub didn’t play well,” Sanders said. “That wasn’t his best, to say the least.”
He was also admittedly "dumbfounded" by the loss, and made it clear that improvements needed to be made moving forward.
With the team taking on Wyoming on Saturday before fully diving into Big 12 play, this does seem like Colorado's last chance to figure this out. After Saturday, Colorado's next five opponents are either ranked or are receiving votes in the latest AP Poll.
Needless to say, Sanders' decision could impact the rest of the season.
