Colorado, Deion Sanders Now After 5-Star Recruit who Decommitted From USC
John Leyba-USA TODAY Sports

The USC Trojans 2026 recruiting class lost prized five-star Xavier Griffin during the week of May 12. Colorado and Deion Sanders are now in pursuit -- with a chance to land another past Trojans commit.

Griffin decommitted from the Trojans Wednesday, in a move that sent shockwaves across the recruiting landscape. The Carrollton, Ga., defender was one of USC's first '26 commits during July 2024.

The Buffaloes, spearheaded by "Coach Prime," are the first school to offer the linebacker since his decommitment. The five-star took to X to announce his Buffaloes offer. Griffin cites linebackers coach Andre' Hart as the man who extended the new four-year opportunity to him.

Sanders and CU now have a prime opportunity to add one more high-profile ex-USC commit. Colorado flipped longtime USC five-star quarterback pledge Julian Lewis on the eve of the December '24 signing period. Lewis since then has completed his first spring football practice in Boulder. The five-star is looking like an early contender to replace Shedeur Sanders as QB1 for the Buffaloes.

Now, Griffin has become a red-hot commodity on the recruiting trail again. Recruiting insider for 247Sports Tom Loy revealed why Griffin and USC parted ways

"Publicly, Griffin informed 247Sports recently that he was nearly done with his recruiting process. He made it clear how much he loved USC and how happy he was to be committed to the Trojans," Loy began.

Here's where things soured between Griffin, head coach Lincoln Riley and the coaching staff. Griffin still conversed with opposing coaches.

"However, behind the scenes, Griffin would take visits and meet with coaches at school. That didn't necessarily sit well with members of the USC coaching staff," Loy explained.

Griffin never shut down his recruitment after verbally committing to USC. He's since mapped out his future visits. USC's Big Ten rival Ohio State is hosting him first on May 30. Alabama comes next on June 6. He then heads to Texas (June 13) and Florida State (June 15).

But now Colorado is attempting to sway Griffin. Sanders and his staff have masterfully lured in prominent four or five-star talents, regardless if they're a portal entry or high school talent. Lewis is already one proof. Griffin and Colorado are a new potential pairing to watch.
