Colorado fined $50,000 for anti-Mormon chants

The University of Colorado was fined $50,000 by the Big 12 on Tuesday for anti-Mormon chants used by their fans during Saturday’s game against BYU at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo.

Colorado Buffaloes fans were heard chanting “f— the Mormons” during the game, which is a negative reference to BYU, which is a Mormon school.

Colorado apologized for the chant by its fans, but the Big 12 still issued a statement and fine.

“Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference. While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday’s game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Colorado will receive a $50,000 fine in accordance with our Conference policies,” Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark wrote in a statement about the matter.

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders also spoke about the situation and offered a much more humorous comment.

“Don’t indict us, just based on a group of young kids that probably was intoxicated and high simultaneously… BYU, we love you, we appreciate you, and we support you,” Sanders said.

BYU won the game 24-21 to improve to 4-0 and drop Colorado to 2-3.
