Colorado is making a surprising change at quarterback heading into its Big 12 opener, and it’s not the move anyone expected. Instead of sticking with veteran Kaidon Salter or turning to five-star freshman Julian Lewis, the Buffaloes are giving the nod to Ryan Staub for Friday night’s game at Houston.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel was first to report the move. Staub came off the bench last weekend against Delaware and looked sharp, going 7-for-10 for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Despite entering the game as the third-string quarterback, he operated with poise and efficiency, giving the offense a spark that caught the attention of the Colorado coaching staff.
It’s a bold move from head coach Deion Sanders, especially with Salter coming off a solid outing of his own in Week 1. The Liberty transfer was efficient against Georgia Tech, completing 13-of-16 passes and adding a rushing score. But Staub’s performance appears to have tilted the competition in his favor, at least for now. Lewis, the highly touted true freshman who enrolled early, has struggled with consistency and will remain in a developmental role as the season progresses.
The timing of the decision is notable. Colorado hits the road to face Houston in a pseudo-conference test, and choosing Staub to lead the offense signals a shift toward rewarding production over reputation. Sanders made it clear in fall camp that the quarterback job would go to whoever earned it. Staub did just that in a limited but impressive showing.
For the Buffs, this could be a defining moment. Starting a quarterback with limited experience in a road game against a Big 12 opponent carries risk, but the upside is clear. Staub has more years of eligibility and now finds himself with a golden opportunity to cement his role long-term. On the other hand, Salter’s future in Boulder becomes murkier, while Lewis may need to wait longer than expected to take over the offense.
Colorado’s offense has weapons, but the key will be whether Staub can keep pace in a hostile environment. Houston is looking sharp after back-to-back outings, and they’ll be aiming to rattle the young quarterback early.
The stage is set for Friday night in Houston, and Colorado is betting big on the hot hand.
