Control games with the running game.
It’ll be easy to keep throwing the ball with a quarterback like Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, but Colorado State won when it ran effectively. It was 6-0 when running for more than 180 yards, and 7-1 when averaging 4.7 yards or more per carry.
Mukendi Wa-Kalonji, EDGE Sr.
The 6-4, 250-pounder has the size, experience, and skills to be the main man pass rusher who takes over the defensive front. A starter all season, he came up with just 2.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss, but it’s his time to take over and be a steady force to draw attention away from the rest of the new front four.

Top Transfer In: Jake Jarmolowich, S Sr.
The secondary needs experienced playmakers to work around, and that’s the 6-2, 200-pound Jarmolowich. After three years at Holy Cross, he turned into a force with 46 tackles with two picks, six broken up passes, and two tackles for loss. He has All-Mountain West potential.
Top Transfer Out: Caleb Goodie, WR Soph.
The Rams needed someone to turn into a big-play target last season, and Goodie did just that, averaging 21 yards per grab with four scores. Now he’ll be a deep threat for the Cincinnati attack.
Fresno State, Oct. 11
This isn’t an elite Colorado State team, but the start of the Mountain West season will make it look good. It should win at San Diego State, and after dealing with Fresno State, Hawaii and Wyoming are winnable.
It won’t be easy after losing two straight in the series, but win, and the Rams should be in the Mountain West title chase until late November.

The Rams should be better on defense, but can the offense be a bit more explosive and consistent?
This isn’t a Mountain West champion sort of squad, but don’t be shocked if it somehow makes its way to the title game.
It’s good enough to go bowling for the second year in a row after failing to get an extra game from 2018 to 2023.
They’ll lose the opener at Washington, Northern Colorado, and then it’ll get interesting. UTSA and Washington State might be better than Colorado State, but both have to come to Fort Collins.
Only the trip to Boise State is an almost-certain Mountain West loss. UNLV is a tad weaker, Fresno State is a tad better, and both of those are home games for the Rams.
It’ll be tough to win eight games in the regular season again, but they’ll come close.
Set The Colorado State Win Total At … 6.5
Likely Wins: Northern Colorado
50/50 Games: Air Force, Fresno State, Hawaii, at New Mexico, at San Diego State, UNLV, UTSA, Washington State, at Wyoming
Likely Losses: at Boise State, at Washington
