Cooper Mays responds to question about returning to Tennessee in 2024

The Tennessee Vols have about 15 to 20 players that could return for a super senior season in 2024. 

One of those players is senior offensive lineman Cooper Mays, who was a true freshman during the COVID-shortened season in 2020, which means he has one year of eligibility remaining. 

Mays is an extremely important part of the Vols' offense. His ability to communicate within the structure of Tennessee's unique up-tempo offense is something the Vols missed when he has out during the first month of the 2023 season. 

On Tuesday, Mays was asked by a reporter if this year's game against Georgia, the Vols' opponent this upcoming weekend, will be his last against the Bulldogs. 

Specifically, Mays was asked what the Georgia rivalry means to him, in addition to whether or not it will be his final game against UGA. 

"It's a big time game for us, both sides," said Mays. "Tennessee is working to put our program back on top and this is one of our big stepping stones...I've gotten a win over all of the big three other than Georgia." 

"And yeah, I'm not sure, for the last part of your question (if it's his final game against Georgia)," added Mays. 

It sounds like the door is at least open when it comes to a return to UT in 2024, which would be huge for the Vols -- especially since there isn't an obvious heir to Mays at the center position next season. But those are decisions that will be made after the season. For now, it certainly sounds like Mays is focused on finishing the 2023 season the right way, which he hopes includes a win against Georgia.
