Could Dillon Gabriel Be a Day 1 Pick in the NFL Draft? The reason I ask this question is because when you look at the top of the NFL Draft, there is no surefire #1 QB in this draft class. Everyone has their opinions, and unfortunately, we aren’t inside the meetings of these NFL front offices, so your guess could be as good as anyone else’s.
Some love Sheduer Sanders, some don’t. Jalen Milroe and Carson Beck have had ups and downs throughout their college careers, Darts continued to grow and Cam Wards quickly became my QB1 if you look at my latest two-round mock draft I dropped earlier in the week. So?
The story of the 2025 Oregon Ducks started with a big move to the Big Ten but then they flourished, with a recent marquee win against Ohio State, the skies are the limit for the Ducks! Oregon’s a top-rated team based on PFF grades, and AP polls, and anywhere people rank teams give out grades. They’ve accomplished this with a strong defense and an offense that balances the run and pass very well. Statistically speaking, none of their offensive weapons are in the top five of their respective positions but they put all the pieces together to sit as the #1 team in the country and undefeated up to this point.
At the center of this sits Dillon Gabriel, the 6’0” 200 lb. transfer from Oklahoma who also played at UCF. He’s been highly productive over his six seasons in college, and when he plays at least 10 games, he puts up over 3,000 yards. He does an excellent job distributing the ball and has a high football IQ that NFL teams will love in this draft process.
When you look at this crop of quarterbacks compared to previous years, a lot of the guys in consideration for the first couple of rounds all have plenty of in-game action in college, and Gabriel needs to be in that group teams consider. In today’s NFL, we oftentimes see teams need guys to sit and develop at the quarterback position, we saw the example just this week with Anthony Richardson getting to rest in favor of the vet Joe Flacco. No one’s going to say Flacco’s going to beat Richardson in anything athletic but Flacco brings all the years of experience leading a team, and I think teams are looking for those types of players in college that have more live experience.
To wrap this up I wanted to share the pros and cons of Gabriel, and ultimately my view of him currently. Gabriel has everything you look for in an NFL QB from the mental aspect, teams will have to decide if the athletic profile is strong enough to give him a shot as their starting QB long term. He doesn’t show elite arm talent but knows where to place the ball to help his pass catchers out. He doesn’t have game-breaking speed but knows how to navigate well and senses pressure with the best of them.
If an NFL Franchise wants to lean into a safer QB, that can run the offense with minimal mistakes, that has a ton of college reps and a high football IQ, the Gabriel has a good chance. In the end, as much as I think he deserves to be in the conversation, he’s probably still a 2nd-3rd round draft prospect at the earliest, even if they win it all.
