The Colorado Buffaloes may have found an unexpected spark for their backfield—and he wasn’t listed as a running back. Kam Mikell, the explosive athlete known for his versatility, was recently seen taking reps at running back during spring practice, signaling that Coach Prime may be considering a surprise move to bolster a thin position group.

With Isaiah Augustave reportedly no longer with the team, Colorado’s running back room is missing last season’s top rusher. Sophomore Micah Welch rushed for 186 yards and four touchdowns in 2024, while Ohio State transfer Dallan Hayden posted similar production with 196 yards and one score. Both backs have battled injuries, leaving depth a serious concern for Coach Prime heading into the fall.

Behind them, redshirt freshman Brandon Hood has impressed in practice with his speed, and Charlie Offerdahl—Coach Prime’s trusted grinder—averaged 4.6 yards per carry last season. Still, the lack of proven production and durability is glaring. Adding a dynamic athlete like Mickell could be more than just creative—it might be necessary.

Before arriving in Boulder, Mikell lined up all over the field in high school, including stints at quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back, and yes—running back. His shiftiness, vision, and burst made him a nightmare in open space. At 6’1” and nearly 200 pounds, he brings the size to run between the tackles and the speed to bounce outside. If his reps at running back are more than just experimental, Sanders may see Mikell as a potential weapon to give opposing defenses fits.

Coach Prime has made it clear that he values adaptability—Drelon Miller’s recent move to getting backfield touches being a prime example. Now, Mickell could follow suit. As the transfer portal window opens April 16, Sanders may still look to add a veteran rusher, but internal solutions like Mikell could buy the running backs coach Marshall Faulk time while unlocking creative wrinkles in the playbook.

If Mikell continues to impress in the backfield, don’t be surprised to see his role expand quickly. For Buffs fans, keep an eye on No. 18—because the next breakout back might not come from the portal, but from within.
