Cowboys Facing $104 Million Hurdle Amid Deion Sanders Speculation

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is notorious for doing things however he pleases, and many expect him to take that approach when hiring a new head coach.

Jones and the Cowboys are in the market for a new head coach after five years with Mike McCarthy, which saw him post a 49-35 record. While McCarthy wasn't fired, his contract ran out, and the two sides could not agree on a new deal. This development has led to Colorado head coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders emerging as a "top candidate," according to Fox's Jordan Schultz.

Sanders and Jones have some pretty significant ties thanks to his time as a player with the Cowboys from 1995-99, which saw him help the team win Super Bowl XXX in 1996. While many fans view this as a perfect alignment between two parties, with trade discussions already circulating on how Dallas might move up from pick No. 12 to select quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the projected top-six pick and son of Deion Sanders, a significant financial hurdle has emerged.

FanDuel posted a mock trade with the question "Who says no?" as the caption. The trade saw the Cowboys send quarterback Dak Prescott to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 1 overall pick and a couple of other draft picks. A move that Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac revealed that Dallas would likely say no to, considering they would take on a $104 million dead cap hit next season if they made the move.

"Dallas," wrote Ginnitti. "They’d take on a $104M dead cap hit in 2025."

While Jones would likely love to have "Coach Prime," the Colorado head coach recently admitted that he had a stipulation regarding coaching in the NFL. Sanders revealed on "Good Morning America" that he'd only leave Colorado for the NFL if he could coach his sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders

"The only way I would consider it is to coach my sons," Sanders said.

A requirement that, combined with the fact that the Cowboys and Prescot inked a four-year, $240 million extension that starts next season, may take him out of the running for the role.
