Blake Doud and Alex Asparuhov are currently competing to be Alabama football’s next starting punter after James Burnip moved on to the NFL.

Kalen DeBoer shared an update on the competition after the Crimson Tide’s second scrimmage.

“Blake has done a really nice job,” DeBoer said.” Last scrimmage, last Saturday here was really the best day I’d seen him have. I think he continued to have a really good week, and then today, came out in our drill work, we didn’t get as many punts working into the scrimmage. I was hoping to. I think we were probably two or three less than what I was looking for with a partial script of what we wanted to get done, but he’s had a really good eight days. I think Alex continues to get better, push, just with his injury that he had, he’s so far ahead of schedule with his recovery. And so now, he’s really getting into that rhythm that showing a lot of improvement there.”

Doud is a redshirt senior, who played four seasons at the Colorado School of Mines. He led all Division II punters with a 46.6 yards per punt average during the 2024 season.

Asparuhov is a true freshman, who enrolled as an early enrollee, but he missed the spring with an injury.

These two are expected to continue to compete for the starting role.
