Oklahoma Sooners fans were shocked when they learned that former five star recruit David Stone is leaving OU and entering the NCAA transfer portal. After the announcement, Stone left a post on social media ruling out some rumors about why he's leaving, and may have dropped another clue about his decision in an interview.
First, he retweeted a message from former NFL player Gerald McCoy who wrote, "Go be great kid!! Proud of you!!" Stone replied, "I gotchu dawg!"
After that message, Stone retweeted a post he made on X back in September 2022.
His message read, "NIL will not be the reason I go to a school to play FOOTBALL. So do not make the assumption again that I can be 'bought'."
One fan replied, "God gots you bro!!"
But another fan wrote, "Well this tweet did not age well." However, Stone appears to have retweeted his 2022 message purposefully to reiterate the message.
On April 19, Gabe Matter of Matter on Mizzou shared what might be another clue about why Stone is leaving.
Matter wrote on X that Stone told Matters on Mizzou: "The Tigers have reached out and I'm definitely listening."
Matter wrote that Stone also said, "There's something different about gameday at #Mizzou. All respect to #Oklahoma but it ain't the same level."
While Stone will no doubt be getting a lot of offers, it's important to note that he is not eligible to transfer to a different SEC team unless he sits out a year.
The news about Stone entering the transfer portal broke on the night of Friday, April 18, with a report from On3. The news was shocking, especially considering that Stone had just said on April 1 that he was "killing it this spring."
Sooner Scoop shared on X on April 19 that Stone was meeting with OU officials again that morning.
