Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is expected to be the first quarterback taken in the 2025 NFL draft, where he is a projected top-10 pick.
Five of the teams drafting in the top 10 have an immediate need at QB — the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets — and Sanders has been linked extensively to both the Giants and Raiders over the last several weeks.
Where Sanders will ultimately end up and the role his father, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, plays in that decision will likely be one of the more debated topics of the NFL offseason.
Deion has made it known to NFL teams that he will intervene if he doesn’t like the team that wants to draft Shedeur, though he hasn’t given any details to how exactly he plans to do that other than saying it’ll be handled privately.
During a recent appearance on the “Tamron Hall Show,” Deion was asked if he has a specific team that he wants Shedeur to end up with and why there are teams he won't allow him to play for.
“You’ve got a child going into an occupation that you already dominated in, and you don’t think I’m going to sit there like a navigational system and tell him, ‘Take a right, right there. Take a left right there. Not that,’” Deion stated. “That’s what I’m called to do. That’s my son, I’m not going to let my son get down in no foolishness.
“…It’s not who I would like for him to play for — there’s a couple teams who I won’t allow him to play for. So, it’s not like that. But this is my profession; I know what’s behind the curtain. We ain’t got to get back there for me to understand what’s behind the curtain and what’s not prominent for my son. I’m not doing it.”
Sanders didn’t name specific teams that were on the no-draft list, but he’s stated in past interviews he didn’t want Shedeur or Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter playing for NFL franchises with a bad front office and a history of losing.
It could be argued four of the five teams picking in the top 10 that need a QB, minus the Giants, fall into that category.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Saturday that Deion has “very strong interest” in the Raiders head-coaching vacancy, and with the team already linked to Shedeur, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the father-son duo reunite in Vegas.
