When Travis Hunter found himself blindsided by criticism from one of his idols, the reaction was immediate—and emotional. Richard Sherman had made comments about Hunter that the young former Colorado star didn’t take lightly, sparking tension between the two. But before it could escalate further, Deion Sanders stepped in.
Sanders, who has guided Hunter’s development both on and off the field, revealed the story during a conversation with Asante Samuel on the podcast “Say What Needs To Be Said.” And according to Coach Prime, it was his own past mistakes that led him to act quickly this time.
“Richard said something about Travis,” Sanders explained. “Travis got bent out of shape… He was mad. Then Travis went back at it.”
But instead of letting things boil over, Sanders took a different route—one rooted in growth.
“I called Sherman. I said, ‘Sherman, get on the phone.’ He goes, ‘Right, we was on the practice field.’ I said, ‘Get on the phone right now, Travis. Y’all get this right. Because I love both of y’all.’”
What pushed him to act so decisively? Sanders recalled his own strained relationship with Samuel.
“That wouldn’t have been in my spirit if that hadn’t happened with you,” he told Samuel. “We never fixed it.”
Rather than let history repeat itself, Sanders used his influence to help the two men talk it out—emphasizing how damaging it can be for young players to feel targeted by their heroes.

“These are youngsters looking up to the OGs,” Sanders said. “And then when the OGs say something about them, they think it’s derogatory. That hurts, man.”
He reminded Sherman of Hunter’s admiration. “You said you was one of his best, that he looked up to. You know how that broke that man?”
The resolution, Sanders said, wasn’t just about Hunter and Sherman. It was about setting an example for the next generation—and showing that even in conflict, there’s room for respect, accountability, and healing.
