A few weeks ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, Colorado safety Shilo Sanders finds himself in some legal hot water.
According to USA TODAY, Sanders has not kept up with payments on his 2023 Mercedes-Benz. The company is claiming Sanders owes $6,877 on his monthly payments from December through February. Also, Sanders reportedly has an outstanding balance that is greater than the trade-in value of the car. As a result, Mercedes-Benz's financial services team is seeking relief from the court where Sanders filed for bankruptcy in 2023.
"The company wants the court’s permission to take possession of the car and for Sanders to provide the location of it," wrote USA TODAY's Brent Schrotenboer.
Sanders previously filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy with almost $12 million in debt in October 2023. The debt stems from an incident 10 years ago involving John Darjean, a security guard from Sanders' high school in Texas.
Months prior to filing for bankruptcy, which set off an automatic hold on any debt collection from him, Sanders agreed to buy the $135,000 Mercedes in installment payments. He also made payments after defaulting on his debt but recently stopped.
“The motor vehicle is depreciating in value, the contract is in default and the movant (Mercedes Benz Financial Services) is being prevented by the automatic stay from exercising its remedies to repossess and liquidate its collateral, the motor vehicle,” said Mercedes Benz Financial Services in its filing.
As for Darjean, he has filed multiple complaints in court to prevent Sanders' debt from being discharged. If it winds up being discharged, Darjean will likely only be able to recoup a small fraction of the money.
Sanders, who was a key contributor to Colorado's defense the last two seasons under his father Deion's tutelage as head coach, is projected to be a Day 3 pick or priority free agent in this month's NFL Draft.
