Deion Sanders teases fans with a glimpse of Colorado's future star QB just days before huge Week 1 matchup

The Colorado Buffaloes pulled one of the least-likely recruiting wins of the 2025 class when they landed four-star dual-threat quarterback Julian "JuJu" Lewis out of Georgia. It seemed as though the talented point guard might've supplanted Shedeur Sanders in the Buffaloes' offense, but then Colorado head coach Deion Sanders found Kaidon Salter available in the transfer portal. Suddenly, the Buffaloes had an excellent succession plan in place.

This offseason's quarterback battle resulted in Salter winning out, and it's not a big surprise. As Colorado prepares to play Georgia Tech in Week 1 as 4.5-point underdogs, though, Sanders let one possibility be known for the quarterback position during the game. We may see the frosh this weekend after all.

"Kaidon Salter is going to start. He's the guy at this point. We're hoping that you'll see Julian "JuJu" Lewis a little bit during the game as well, but the game will predict that."

Flashback to one year ago when Salter first entered the transfer portal, and it seemed as though he could’ve made a big jump from Conference USA to a Power 4 starting gig. He had just won MVP of the league and totaled over 3,900 yards and 44 touchdowns.

However, Liberty and Salter had a down campaign, leading to a flurry of quality players hitting the portal again. The former Tennessee Volunteer was dismissed from the team before the 2021 season but quickly found a home.

Salter is hoping to make his own bid as an NFL prospect for 2026. Profiling best as a backup, he’ll have to master some more advanced concepts from offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, though I expect a high dosage of easy RPO concepts to ease the transition.

Lewis is certainly interesting, and his comparison to Bryce Young from 247Sports makes him sound like a good fit for a timing-based offense needing accuracy. Salter plays in the opposite way and is more like Shedeur Sanders. Here's what Andrew Ivins of 247 had to say.

"Quarterback protege that exits high school with over 10,000 career passing yards despite reclassifying and forgoing his senior season. Lacks elite physical traits, but is an elite distributor of the football with his quick release and advanced mechanics that picked apart defenses in the Peach State’s highest classification. Frequently in sync and in tune with his wide receivers as he excels at throwing with pace and precision to the first and second levels. Has continued to progress as a full-field reader over the years and is the type of young signal caller that will work through his keys and reads while looking off defenders. Can sense pressure and slip away from sacks, but shouldn’t exactly be viewed as a dynamic athlete that’s going to amplify a run game. Capable of connecting on some deep shots, but prep spray chart is painted with horizontal tosses and camp evaluations suggest he can keep improving as a vertical passer. Overall, projects as a new-age point guard that can push the tempo in a modern spread attack with his pin-point accuracy and savvy decision making. Smaller stature is not ideal, but has the skills and confidence to win games on Saturdays – and potentially right away."
