Desmond Howard throws shade at the Ohio State Buckeyes following their win over Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns

The college football world was spoiled with a top-tier matchup to start the season, as the Ohio State Buckeyes hosted the Texas Longhorns. Ohio State came out on top, winning 14-7, and led 14-0 until the fourth quarter.

For most of the game, the Buckeyes appeared to be in control. Only late in the contest, when the Longhorns had the ball down one score, did momentum feel in question. Still, one college football analyst—and former Michigan Wolverine—believes neither team looked worthy of a top-five ranking.

“I’m not a big fan of preseason rankings. To me, it’s not worth the paper it’s written on,” Desmond Howard said during ESPN’s pregame show for the North Carolina vs. TCU game on Monday night. “You look at the Ohio State-Texas game, No. 1 vs. No. 3. Neither team played like a top-five team in my opinion.

I thought both teams played OK. Obviously, Arch Manning was the big story coming into the game. He was an even bigger story coming out of it because of the hype. Julian Sayin played OK—well enough to win.”

Statistically, Ohio State managed just 14 points and 203 yards of offense against the Longhorns. After the game, Ryan Day admitted the staff held back a lot from freshman quarterback Julian Sayin—and that in hindsight, they probably didn’t need to. Despite the conservative approach, the Buckeyes were up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. And this performance didn’t come against a non–Power Four opponent like many teams schedule early in the season—and like the Buckeyes will play the next couple of weeks.

Ohio State went out and made the preseason Heisman favorite, Arch Manning, look very subpar. The offense did just enough, and the team showed the poise of a top-five program. It’s hard to agree with Howard’s take on this one. The Buckeyes will be back in action on Saturday when they host Grambling State and it is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. kick.
