Disgraced Former Nebraska Cornhuskers HC ‘Dying’ for Critical 2nd Chance
Dylan Widger-USA TODAY Sports

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Scott Frost left the program in shambles after going 16-31 over five seasons.

Frost returned to his alma mater after going undefeated as the head coach of the UCF Knights. Nebraska faithful were excited to have one of the hottest coaches on the market at the time. Frost’s Nebraska teams showed promise, but he was responsible for one of the most abysmal stretches in the history of the program.

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers HC Scott Frost wants to coach again

In an article from CBS Sports, Frost said that he is in the midst of uncertainty and wants to coach again.

“For the first time in my life, I don’t know what’s next,” the former Nebraska coach told CBS Sports. “I’m dying to get back in.”

Frost went on to explain that he doesn’t want a job as a media personality or someone just surrounding the sport. He wants to be a coach again. Now, he doesn’t know what’s next for him.

“This is bad to say to a media guy, but I’ve never wanted to be a critic,” Frost said. “I’ve wanted to be in the arena.”

“My whole life I was a little league player and a high school player and then a college player and then an NFL player and then a [graduate assistant], and then a position coach, then a coordinator and then a head coach,” Frost said. “It was on a trajectory, and I knew what was next.”

Despite Frost’s historically terrible tenure with the Huskers, he still thinks he has what it takes to be a coach. He still has confidence in his coaching ability.

“I know this, there’s some good coaches out there. I’m a good coach. I belong doing it,” Frost said. “I just don’t know for sure where that’s going to be right now. If the right head coach job comes along, I’d take it. If the right coordinator job comes, I’d take it.”

While Frost failed immensely at Nebraska, he has proven in the past that he can be a solid coach. He was the offensive coordinator for one of the country’s most powerful offenses before becoming a “national champion” head coach for UCF.

He led Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Ducks offense to a national title appearance in 2014. He also led UCF to a victory over the Auburn Tigers in 2017, which caused the team and its fans to claim a national title.

Frost didn’t come to Nebraska as one of the hottest coaches on the market for no good reason. Many other teams were after Frost during the 2017-2018 coaching carousel. Athlon Sports gave the hire an A+ grade in 2018 and they were not alone in thinking the Huskers hit a home run with the hire.

Frost’s replacement at UCF was Josh Heupel. Heupel is now the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, who upset the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2022 en route to an 11-2 season. Heupel is 27-12 with the Volunteers, a record that Nebraska fans haven’t seen in a three-year span since the Bo Pelini era.

Scott Frost will have to work his way back up the ladder after his performance with the Nebraska Cornhuskers

Frost didn’t reach a bowl game once with the Huskers. They were offered a spot after going 3-5 in the COVID season, but Frost and the team decided they didn’t want to play in an extra game.

Not only did Frost not reach a bowl game in any of the years in which he was the head coach, but the team saw significant deterioration. They won four and five games in Frost’s first two years, respectively. Then, they went 3-5, 3-9 and 1-2 before Frost was fired in the middle of the season.

Frost was responsible for some terrible losses in his five seasons as the head coach. He dropped a game to Georgia Southern on his way out. He inexplicably attempted an onside kick when up 28-17 on the Northwestern Wildcats and he dropped a game to one of Nebraska’s rivals, the Colorado Buffaloes, after being up 17-0.

After coming into the Big Ten saying that the conference would need to adjust to him and his offense, Frost was publicly ostracized by fans all around college football when he failed to leave any sort of mark in the extended period of time given to him by the program.

Unconfirmed rumors of alcohol abuse and lack of effort cloud Frost’s tenure. Regardless of how true those rumors are, they will not make it easier for Frost to get another job. Nebraska media personality Mike’l Severe explained his lack of commitment.

If Frost wants to find his way back onto the sideline, he will have a plethora of fans to prove wrong. The climb back to being the head coach of a Power Five school will be a massive one for Scott Frost.
