There's been a lot of panic regarding the state of Oklahoma's offense right now after several players from the Sooners entered the transfer portal (and more might still follow after I write this) since the season ended.
Today's latest news saw fans in a tizzy, as one player transferred to a fellow SEC school. Tight end Bauer Sharp, who led the team in receiving (by default, mostly), transferred to LSU.

This announcement had fans panicking. If another SEC team wanted him, then clearly he must be talented and would be important to keep, right?!
Yawn.
Sharp was a glorified jumbo slot receiver who consistently failed to make a positive impact throughout the season. Can anyone remember anything but the failed sweep play or the silly pass play they tried with him against LSU?
Maybe LSU figures him out better than OU did this year. That's entirely possible. It won't be hard to be a better passing team than Oklahoma was in 2024.
What I don't understand is the state of sheer panic from Oklahoma fans about this and other moves in the portal from their offense.
Oklahoma went 6-6 last year! They had the worst offense the team has posted in a decade. A bunch of players are leaving from a poorly performing unit. Why is anyone mad about this? Yes, they are losing plenty of players, and that looks bad. Look at who they are losing though.
The wide receiver room of Nic Anderson, Jalil Farooq, and Andrel Anthony barely played at all in 2024. Bauer Sharp dropped multiple big passes. Brenen Thompson messed up some routes and battled injuries. Jackson Arnold dragged the offense down in multiple games and lost Oklahoma games they should have won this past season.
This is all smart processing on Oklahoma's part, in my opinion. That's contingent on them finding better pieces in the transfer portal, of course, but I would hope that they would trim the roster out and rebuild the offense with better pieces instead of running it back with everyone after how bad last season was. Jobs are on the line and they can't afford to hope players stay healthy or figure out how to pass the ball.
If they weren't active in the portal to rebuild the roster and this sort of situation happened again for Oklahoma, people would also complain that "The staff should have seen this coming after last season".
It feels rather silly to complain about the team cutting ties with players from this disappointing season when people spent the entire season complaining about the main side of the ball they are overturning. If they weren't doing this, I think people would also think "Well, why aren't they going after better players in the portal after this year", so it's all rather hypocritical.
My whole point is this: R-e-l-a-x. I get it. It's pretty overwhelming to see player after player hit the portal to leave and panic can set in when it isn't followed by an announcement of a player coming to your team.
The portal's barely been open for a few days now, and I can promise you Oklahoma has been active in the portal. They are working to rebuild the roster and get the players that they want to play for them in 2025. Just give them some time before we hit the panic button and freak out over the direction of the program. I promise you it's easier that way.
