When Penn State football takes the field on September 2, it’ll do so with a new starting quarterback for the first time in four seasons. While the quarterback battle heats up, whoever gets the starting job will certainly have the support of one of the best rushing attacks in college football. Recently at local media day, quarterback Drew Allar highlighted the dynamic playmaking ability of Penn State running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, and discussed the importance of the duo to the Nittany Lion offense.

Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen completely turned around the Penn State rushing attack last fall. Going from a unit that could barely crack 100 yards a game two short years ago, Singleton and Allen have now put the Nittany Lion running backs among the discussion for one of the best position groups in college football.

Now, the duo that set Penn State and Big Ten records as freshmen are ready to take another leap forward as sophomores this season. In a few short weeks, Singleton and Allen can look to become the leaders of a potentially “new look” Penn State offense under a first-year starting quarterback. At Penn State football media day, we asked Drew Allar how having the support of talented running backs can aid the young quarterback room.

“It helps a ton, just because you can really play complementary offense,” Allar said. “The run game helps the pass game, and the pass game helps the run game.” Allar went on to explain how Singleton and Allen can change the dynamic of a game in an instant. “These backs don’t need much to take one 80 yards to the house, as we all know,” he said. “So, just being complementary to each other, and it obviously helps the quarterbacks a lot when you have two studs in the backfield like that.”
