Colorado Still in the Fight: Buffs Crack Final Five for Top 2026 WR Jase Mathews
In a recruiting race filled with SEC giants, the Colorado Buffaloes have managed to elbow their way into the conversation. Four-star wide receiver Jase Mathews, one of the top playmakers in the 2026 class has listed the Buffaloes among his final five schools.
It’s the kind of recruiting battle Deion Sanders lives for. The Buffs are up against heavyweights Texas A&M, LSU, Auburn and Mathews’ in-state favorite, Ole Miss, all vying for the 6-foot-2, 180-pound standout from Greene County High in Leakesville, Mississippi.
Mathews, ranked No. 103 nationally and No. 12 among wideouts by 247Sports, has not yet announced a commitment date, but after wrapping up his official visits earlier this month, the finish line is clearly in sight. Here’s why Colorado still has a shot.

Early Visit Shows Intent
Mathews made his first official visit to Boulder on May 2. While it’s easy to overlook the importance of timing, early visits often indicate strong mutual interest. Deion Sanders and his staff got one of the first face-to-face impressions, giving them valuable time to build a personal relationship, one of Sanders’ greatest recruiting tools.
Coach Prime’s Wide Receiver Legacy
Let’s face it, few coaches understand the wide receiver position like Deion Sanders. His resume, NFL pedigree and unmatched charisma are helping flip the narrative around Colorado football. Sanders’ brand appeals directly to top-skill talent like Mathews, especially those looking for exposure and NFL preparation.
Room to Shine
Unlike schools with stacked wide receiver depth charts, Colorado offers something unique: immediate opportunity. Mathews, who racked up 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns during his junior season, would likely have a clear path to early playing time. With the Buffs’ 2026 class currently ranked last in the Big 12, Mathews’ commitment could be program-defining.
While On3 currently gives Ole Miss the edge with a 35.7% projection, Colorado remains firmly in the mix at 8.5%, even with stiff competition from SEC powers. And momentum may be on the rise, as just this week, blue-chip cornerback Preston Ashley committed to the Buffs, signaling renewed recruiting energy in Boulder.
If Mathews chooses black and gold, he wouldn’t just be a headline. He’d be a cornerstone.
What’s Next?
Mathews is expected to announce his commitment later this summer. Until then, Colorado fans, and Coach Prime will be holding their breath.
