Emerging Florida Gator set to miss significant time opens the door for a freshman to step into bigger role

The injury bug for the Florida Gators has been hitting them over the course of the last few months. Most of that has been focused on quarterback DJ Lagway, but it's now gone to the running back room.

Running back Treyaun Webb suffered an injury to his hamstring earlier this offseason, and a setback has required him to have surgery. He will miss at least a month with the injury.

Webb being injured is a tough one for the Gators, but one that they dealt with last year. He suffered a season-ending injury, which allowed him to use his redshirt. Webb was the backup last season to Montrell Johnson Jr. after Trevor Etienne chose to enter the transfer portal.

This season, Webb looked to be a big factor in the backfield that features sophomore Jadan Baugh, but Ja'Kobi Jackson looks to be ready to step into a number two role with Baugh out, as he was the number three guy the majority of 2024. Where things can get really interesting is who can step into that number three role. Head coach Billy Napier talked about the number three running back role during Monday's press conference.

“We have competition for who’s the third back,” Napier said Monday. “That’s a big-time role in our offense. We know that running backs get banged up. I don’t think we’ve had a year where the top two, one of those guys will get banged up. So, who is that guy? KD, Duke, hopefully Treyaun gets back in the fold, and then obviously, Byron Louis has flashed a little bit. But we got a lot of work to do to figure out who that is.”

There are some interesting freshmen who could be in line for the role. Byron Louis is the highest-ranked recruit of the group, but redshirt freshman KD Daniels has the most experience, which likely gives him the edge.

Fall camp is going to be big for constructing the depth chart.
