Nebraska's Emmett Johnson is one of the top running back prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft class, with the ability to create big plays on the ground and through the air. His impressive combination of vision, patience and quickness should make him a productive pro, and could sneak him into the Day 2 conversation.

Here's everything NFL fans need to know about Johnson heading into this year's draft:

Emmett Johnson's Strengths

One of the most important things a running back can do is create his own yardage, and few in this class do it better than Johnson. A joystick of a runner in tight spaces, Johnson can change direction at light speed, leaving would-be tacklers in his wake as he keeps charging down the field. He’s also got the vision to match, setting up his jump-cuts and opportunities to work against the grain and get opposing defenders to overcommit. Johnson isn’t afraid of contact between the tackles, and finishes most of his runs with forward movement. He’s a dynamic receiver out of the backfield, with the ability to work through traffic on screens and check-downs, setting up blocks and weaving his way to big gains.

Emmett Johnson's Weaknesses

He’s not the biggest back, and more powerful tacklers can take him on and bring him down on their own more often than not. Johnson excels in short areas and when moving laterally, but he doesn’t have that elite gear to run away from the defense for long touchdowns, often cutting caught by faster defenders or effective pursuit angles. If he wants to stay on the field on third down at the next level, Johnson will need to improve his effectiveness as a pass blocker.

Final Analysis

After waiting his turn, Johnson exploded with huge numbers in his first year as a full-time starter, and it’s easy to believe his best football is still in front of him. His versatile skill set and combination of vision and agility should make him a productive pro as both a runner and a receiver, even if he remains in a time-share role.
