We've reached the first week of June, which means we're less than three full months away from the start of the 2025 college football season. Naturally, ESPN is looking to get out ahead in predicting the top teams of the new season.
On Tuesday, ESPN's Football Power Index computer model (FPI) shared an update that ranks all of the teams heading into the 2025 season.
Last year Ohio State overcame two regular season losses to enter the College Football Playoff as an at-large bid before going on a tear and winning the national title. But in the ensuing offseason, the Buckeyes lost several key players that won them the title. As a result, Ohio State are not the top-ranked team - or even in the top-three.
The top spot actually belongs to the Texas Longhorns, who have hype to the moon thanks to third-year quarterback and Manning family scion Arch Manning. Just behind them are the ever-popular Georgia and Alabama. Behind the Buckeyes are a pair of Big Ten rivals in Penn State and Oregon.
Here is the full top-25 ranking:
As always the field has a pretty overpowering SEC flavor. 13 of the conference's 16 members made the top 25, including the entire top-three. The Big Ten showed up in a fairly big way too with six teams in the top 25, three of whom made the top-six.
Based on this ranking, the 12 teams to qualify for the 2025-26 College Football Playoff would probably look something like this:
The obvious standout in that ranking is Tulane, which ranks 36th in the power rankings right now. Under the current format, they would be the fifth and final conference champion to automatically qualify and would have to take on Georgia in Athens to mark their CFP debut.
Alabama would host rival Tennessee, Penn State would host Texas A&M and Oregon would play Notre Dame in the first round, with the winners being seeded into games against the four remaining conference champions.
How accurate do you think the ranking will wind up being by the end of the season?
