ESPN to broadcast Colorado Buffaloes spring football game

The Colorado Buffaloes were among the worst Power Five teams last season (1-11), but hiring Deion Sanders as head coach has turned them into must-see television.

ESPN is scheduled to air Colorado's annual Black & Gold Day spring game on April 22 -- just one of two spring games that won't be confined to ESPN+ or a conference network. Georgia, the back-to-back defending champion, is the only other program to receive this spring game treatment -- except the Bulldogs' scrimmage will be aired on ESPN2, rather than the main network.

While SEC powerhouse Alabama will have its spring game at the same time as Colorado, the Crimson Tide will be streamable on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.

This will be Colorado's highest-attended spring game ever, with over 35,000 tickets sold to date. Last year, only 1,950 attended, per BuffZone’s Brian Howell. Folsom Field's max capacity is 50,183, and a sellout seems likely with over a month until the intra-squad scrimmage.

Several notable high school recruits in the 2024 and 2025 recruiting classes will be on campus to attend the spring game in Boulder. Five-star edge-rusher Colin Simmons highlights the list of guests.

Sanders' first recruiting class at Colorado -- which will be eligible to begin signing in December -- currently ranks 21st overall in the country and includes the No. 1 transfer haul in the FBS, according to 247Sports

A number of Jackson State players followed Sanders to Boulder, including CB Travis Hunter, the top recruit in the class of 2022, and Sanders' son, Shedeur, a four-star QB commit. Hunter recorded two interceptions, and eight passes defended last season.

In two seasons as Jackson State's starter, Sanders threw for 6,963 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. During his introductory news conference, "Coach Prime" assured the media that Sanders would not be guaranteed the starting job, though the position appears to be his to lose.

Colorado will begin spring practices on March 19, while Sanders and the Buffaloes open their 2023 season on the road against last season's national runner-up, TCU, on Sept. 2. Perhaps ESPN will choose it as the "College GameDay" site for Week 1.
