Ex-Penn State football, Pitt QB enters transfer portal

A former three-star recruit, Christian Veilleux entered the transfer portal for the first time at the conclusion of the 2022 regular season, ending his two-year stint with Penn State football. In that time with the Nittany Lions, Veilleux appeared in five games, completing 23-35 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns.

His career best in the Blue and White came against Rutgers in 2021, where he went 15-23 for 235 yards and three touchdowns in place of a sidelined Sean Clifford.

Veilleux played in seven games for the Pitt Panthers this fall, starting five. His first college start was an upset win over undefeated Louisville, a game for which he bestowed some credit on the Penn State football coaching staff afterward. Veilleux finished the year going 94-184 for 1,179 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Compared to some programs, it’s been a relatively quiet first day of the spring transfer portal window for James Franklin and Penn State football, at least publicly. The Nittany Lions have been hit with two departures as of Tuesday evening, but both at the same position.

On Monday, wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith entered the portal after leaving the program ahead of the Blue-White Game last week. According to Pete Nakos of On3, Lambert-Smith is the top available receiver in the transfer portal. Nakos reports that the senior had already been contacted by several teams earlier in the day on Tuesday: Auburn, Georgia, Texas A&M, Colorado, and West Virginia.

On Tuesday evening, Penn State lost its second wide out of the spring portal window, Malick Meiga. Primarily a special teams contributor for the Nittany Lions, Meiga has nine catches for 106 yards and a touchdown in his career.

But as Franklin and his staff begin to wrap up end-of-spring meetings with the roster, more movement is bound to occur in the coming days.

“So when I say an interesting couple of weeks [are coming] in college football, there’s a lot of reasons why that’s interesting, Franklin said after the Blue-White Game Saturday. “For me, that’s what these meetings are going to be about. The individual meetings with our position coaches. The meetings with me.

“We’ve had some conversations with some of our guys already. But at the end of the day, you never really know until it happens. I think we got pretty good relationships where guys, for the most part, have been very transparent and honest with us, and we do the same thing with them.”
