The Tennessee Volunteers faced a first-round exit from the College Football Playoff against the Ohio State Buckeyes, lost quarterback Nico Iamaleava to an NIL-driven exit and now surprisingly faces an ex-playmaker's medical retirement.

Receiver Bru McCoy announced Tuesday in a social media post that he will medically retire from football at 24 due to complications from a displaced fracture-dislocation of his right ankle sustained in 2023.

The debilitating injury initially sidelined him for the remainder of that season and required multiple surgeries and a weeklong hospital stay after being taken off the field on a stretcher.

McCoy made a comeback in 2024 and was invited to the NFL scouting combine, but it seems McCoy found drawing the line a more viable option.

“It’s with a heavy heart but a feeling of gratitude that I share with you guys that I made the difficult decision to medically retire from football,” the long post read. “This has been one of the toughest decisions of my life, but after careful consideration with my doctors, family, and people closest to me I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the right path for a long-term health and well-being."

“As many of you know I came back and played last year after what could’ve been a career ending injury. I felt it was my responsibility to myself, coaches, family, and most importantly the community I have here in Knoxville to give back for all of the love that has been shown to me. I want to take a moment to sincerely thank each and every one of you who has supported me throughout my journey for it means more than you could ever know,” he added.

A former five-star recruit out of Mater Dei in California, he transferred from USC to Tennessee in 2022 and recorded 52 receptions for 667 yards and four touchdowns during the Volunteers’ 11-2 campaign.

Though projected as a mid-round pick, lingering medical concerns prompted teams to pass on him, and McCoy opted to close his playing chapter and focus on his long-term health.

“Although this chapter of my football journey has come to an end, I believe this is just the beginning,” McCoy wrote. “I’m excited about the next steps, and I’m determined to continue pushing myself in new directions. This is not the end of my pursuit of greatness, just the beginning.”
