Five Week 4 CFB games to watch: Top-10 showdown in South Bend; will Lane Kiffin ever beat Alabama?

Week 4 includes compelling matchups, including six featuring ranked-vs.-ranked opponents. Here are the best games:

The five-star game: No. 6 Ohio State (3-0) at No. 9 Notre Dame (3-0) | 7:30 p.m. ET

The Irish rank ninth in scoring offense (46 PPG), 13 spots higher than the Buckeyes (40.3 PPG). Unlike in last year's meeting, Notre Dame has the edge at quarterback with Sam Hartman years ahead in his development over Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord. Hartman is a sixth-year senior with 52 games and 1,687 pass attempts on his résumé while McCord is a junior with 15 games played and 134 passing attempts.

Ohio State has better playmakers (including running back TreVeyon Henderson and wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka), but don't ignore Notre Dame running back Audric Estime, who has 521 rushing yards and averages 8.3 yards per attempt. The Irish also have one of the best offensive tackles in college football, Joe Alt, setting up a great showdown with talented Buckeyes edge-rushers Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau.

The Heisman game: No. 19 Colorado (3-0) at No. 10 Oregon (3-0) | 3:30 p.m. ET

Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders or Oregon quarterback Bo Nix will pass the first major hurdle on his path toward the Heisman Trophy on Saturday. Colorado is appointment viewing (that still feels weird to type), so this game will draw a large audience.

Sanders is second in the nation in passing yards (1,251) and has inserted himself into the Heisman conversation, but he may be a long shot for the prestigious award. A trip to Eugene against Oregon is his toughest test so far.

Nix was one of the top preseason contenders for the Heisman. He has helped his stock with a stellar completion percentage (77.6) and yards per attempt (9.1 yards).

Upset special: No. 15 Ole Miss (3-0) at No. 13 Alabama (2-1) | 3:30 p.m. ET

The Crimson Tide are a 6.5-point favorite despite being a mess at quarterback. Jalen Milroe is back after being benched in Week 3. The last time we saw him, he struggled in a 34-24 loss to Texas.

The Rebels may not be as good as the Longhorns on defense, but the offense — led by quarterback Jaxson Dart — should move the ball against a defense that allowed 23 first downs and 449 yards to Texas.

Lane Kiffin, who worked on Alabama's staff from 2014-16, is 0-3 against the Tide's Nick Saban in three games as Ole Miss head coach. Mississippi has been outscored 135-93 in the series since Kiffin took over, although last year was a close (30-24) one. As SEC Network's Peter Burns put it, if not this season, when will Kiffin ever beat Saban?

Under-the-radar game: No. 14 Oregon State (3-0) at No. 21 Washington State (3-0) | 7 p.m. ET

The Beavers and Cougars are two of the best stories in college football outside of Boulder, Colo. The Pac-12 programs were snubbed during the summer of conference realignment but proved they belong in the Power Five with their twin 3-0 starts.

Oregon State quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei has looked much improved compared to his time at Clemson. He's averaging a career-best 9.3 yards per attempt, and the Beavers are averaging 41 points, 16th in the country.

Washington State is led by junior quarterback Cameron Ward (72% completion percentage, 11 total TDs, no picks), whose team average 48.3 points, sixth best in the nation.

Wild-card game: No. 22 UCLA (3-0) at No. 11 Utah (3-0) | 3:30 p.m. ET

Either the Bruins or Utes will have their perfect season end Saturday. The Utes are a six-point favorite despite quarterback Cam Rising's health remaining a concern. He's recovering from a torn ACL suffered on Jan. 1 in the Rose Bowl and hasn't played this season. Utah has leaned on its defense, which ranks 10th in scoring defense (10.3 PPG).

UCLA's offense hasn't missed a beat without 2022 starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who was selected by the Browns during the 2023 NFL Draft. QB Dante Moore has been solid this season but only has 51 passing attempts. UCLA leans on its rushing attack and running backs Carson Steele (30 carries, 243 yards) and T.J. Harden (25 carries, 233 yards). They give the Bruins a chance to make Saturday's game against Utah one of the best of the weekend.
