Florida is having a third consecutive disappointing season under Billy Napier, but the head coach is not in danger of losing his job.

Coming off yet another loss to a ranked opponent, Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin has decided to put any speculation about Napier’s job status to rest. Stricklin issued a statement on Thursday that all but confirmed Napier will remain with the Gators in 2025.

“I wanted to let you know that Billy Napier will continue as head football coach of the Florida Gators,” Stricklin wrote.

"As we’ve seen these past several weeks, the young men on this team represent what it means to be a Gator. Their resolve, effort and execution are evident in their performance and growth each week — building a foundation that promises greater success next weekend and beyond.

"I am confident that Billy will meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. We will work alongside him to support any changes needed to elevate Gator football. As college athletics evolves, UF is committed to embracing innovation and strategy, ensuring the Gators thrive in today’s competitive landscape.”

Napier is in his third year as head coach in Gainesville. He has a record of 15-18 overall, and Florida is 4-4 this season. The Gators put up a fight against No. 2 Georgia last Saturday before losing 34-20. They also lost to another top-10 team in Tennessee by a score of 23-17 a few weeks ago, so Stricklin and other Florida administrators must feel Napier is close to breaking through.

Most Florida fans will probably disagree. Napier made some comments about Gators fans after the team’s season-opening blowout loss to Miami that did not sit well. There have been points this season where Florida fans have openly called for Napier to be fired.

For now, Napier remains.
