One of the least talked about yet most concerning storylines of the offseason has been the Florida Gators' quarterback situation with DJ Lagway.
The soon-to-be second-year quarterback was an instant star for the team as a true freshman, leading them to a 6-1 record after replacing the injured Graham Mertz. With some key reps and another offseason under his belt, there had been a growing belief that the Gators could be poised to make a College Football Playoff run in 2025.
However, multiple injuries have prevented Lagway from being able to throw during spring ball, and according to college football insider Matt Hayes of USA TODAY, revealed that Lagway's shoulder injury could require surgery.
"The two people close to the situation said the shoulder injury, more than likely, will need surgery at some point," wrote Hayes. "The hope is offseason rest – as many as six months of non-throwing – will strengthen the shoulder, or at least allow Lagway to play the 2025 season."
As revealed by Hayes, the hope is that Lagway resting will be enough for the shoulder to heal on its own, but that is obviously a major case of wishful thinking.
With the spring portal window approaching, the Gators' activeness in it may be the indicator of how they feel Lagway has progressed. Behind him they have a couple veterans that are unproven, and far from the level of skill that Lagway has.
Former four-star Harrison Bailey who has spent time at Tennessee, UNLV and Louisville headlines the rest of the room. There is also former Colorado State quarterback Clay Millen, walk-on Aidan Warner who played in six games and started one, and also three-star Tramell Jones Jr.
Obviously Lagway returning is Florida's best hope for a strong season after going 8-5 in 2024, but an extended Lagway absence could be a catastrophe for all involved.
