The Florida Gators didn't have the best offense under head coach Billy Napier, and it was a big reason why he ended up getting fired. His 22-23 record was mostly due to the lack of offensive output, most of which you can pinpoint to Napier's play calling, something he wouldn't give up.
That aspect was the biggest detriment to the Gators over the last four seasons, and we got to see the first play calls from someone other than Napier since 2021.
The fact that the Gators had a new play caller was a really exciting aspect of Saturday's game against the Georgia Bulldogs. Even though it didn't go in favor of the Gators ending in a 24-20 loss, there were a lot of really good elements to the offense.
Head coach Billy Gonzales was asked about the offense and how they made going vertical a focus, and his answer was telling.
"We talk just about giving our players an opportunity to run a little bit," said Gonzales. "The thing in the pass game you always want to try to design pass plays, whether their one high or two high beaters or top down level beaters or progression reads.
"It’s all dictated — what shot you’re going to be able to take is going to be dictated by the defense they’re playing in the back end. So are there times you wish you could take the ball deeper? Absolutely. They might be playing zone thirds. Are there times you can throw the ball with a runner? Well, sometimes they’re playing zone or man. Offensively, we try to have those answers based on the coverages we’re given."
It didn't take long for the Gators to make an impact down the field, as Tre Wilson caught a 40-yard touchdown to start the scoring for the Gators.

The Gators finally opening things up in the passing game is huge for the Gators going into the final four games of the season, and it shows how much talent they have for the next head coach to work with.
This isn't a team that is void of talent, they are in a good position moving forward.
