The Florida Gators weren't able to secure another four-star recruit on Sunday.
They were in the running for four-star edge rusher Asharri Charles before he committed to the Miami Hurricanes. Charles chose the Hurricanes over the Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Missouri Tigers, and Penn State Nittany Lions.
He told On3's Hayes Fawcett that he "loves" the Canes. Charles is the second-highest-ranked recruit in the Canes' 2026 class behind five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell. According to 247Sports, the Canes have the eighth-best recruiting class for 2026.
Despite the loss for the Gators, they're still in a good spot for the 2026 recruiting class. They have the 13th-best recruiting class for 2026 and recently got a commitment from four-star cornerback C.J. Bronaugh. He committed to the Gators on June 18 after he de-committed from the Nebraska Cornhuskers earlier in the week.
On Saturday, the Gators also received a commitment for their 2027 class when four-star athlete Tramond Collins chose them over the Tennessee Volunteers, Auburn Tigers, and other schools.
They hope to keep landing more big-time recruits if they can win more on the field in 2025. Gators head coach Billy Napier had the best season of his three-year tenure in 2024, leading them to an 8-5 record. He has a 19-19 record going into year four.
The Gators will open the 2025 season against the Long Island Sharks on August 30 before playing the Canes in Miami on September 20. The Canes beat the Gators in Gainesville during the 2024 season, 41-17.
