For the Alabama Crimson Tide's first game of the season, they will be traveling to one of the most hostile stadiums in the country, Doak Campbell Stadium, to take on the Florida State Seminoles.
While on paper, years ago, this was a battle that was expected to be between two College Football Playoff teams. However, both the Tide (9-4) and the Seminoles (2-10) are coming off underwhelming seasons, with their coaches, Kalen DeBoer and Mike Norvell, possibly coaching for their jobs.
Another similarity between the two programs is the fact that they'll have a new offensive coordinator calling plays for a new quarterback. DeBoer turned to his longtime assistant, Ryann Grubb, while Norvell hired former UCF head coach Gus Malzahn.
As for the quarterbacks, Alabama is in the middle of a three-player battle, while the Seminoles will likely be leaning on Boston College transfer, Thomas Castellanos.
Although Castellanos was benched last season by Boston College and isn't necessarily viewed as a top quarterback in the sport, in a recent interview with On3, he certainly spoke like one.
Castellanos made it clear that this is a new era in Alabama, and that Nick Saban is no longer walking on that sideline.
“I’m excited, man,” he said. “People, I don’t know if they know, but you go back and watch every first game that I played in, we always start fast. I dreamed of moments like this. I dreamed of playing against Alabama. They don’t have Nick Saban to save them. I just don’t see them stopping me.
While Castellanos is confident in himself and the Seminoles, the oddsmakers at ESPN BET currently have the Tide favored by 13 points.
This matchup will be one of the marquee Week 1 matchups, and is set to kick at 3:30 p.m. ET while airing on ABC.
