The Florida State Seminoles were a shell of themselves last season. They won just two games, their worst season since the 70s. And, to that fan base and program, that’s just unacceptable.
It’s even more unacceptable when you realize that head coach Mike Norvell has really done everything the right way. He’s recruited well, and he’s coached well at times. And, somehow, even after a two-win season, he’s still recruiting well. The Seminoles have a top-15 class for 2026, and they have a pretty good 2027 class so far, although it is early.
They have a few commits for 2027, and their recent losing could be something that makes one of those players rethink his commitment, especially considering there is one school in the state that has been winning recently.
Mekhi Williams is one of the Florida State Seminoles' prized possessions for their 2027 class. Sure, you can say that’s because they only three players committed to the class so far, but really, Williams is a guy who they think can be a star.
Williams is a four-star safety from Ruskin, Florida, who committed to Florida State on March 26, 2025. The 6'3", 170-pound junior from Lennard High School is ranked as the No. 151 overall prospect, No. 11 safety, and No. 13 player in Florida by 247Sports. He chose the Seminoles over offers from Colorado, Wake Forest, Liberty, Toledo, FAU, and FIU, though Miami and UCF are still pursuing him, and he plans to visit both schools.
This is where things get a bit tricky for the Seminoles. Florida State has to hold off some pretty big in-state rivals like Miami and UCF, and keep Williams’ eyes on FSU. But that’s easier said than done.

“I plan on visiting Miami real soon, just to see what they’re about,” Williams told John Garcia of On3. “I know a couple of people there from Tampa, like Jaelen Waters. Miami is a place, I feel like, I know I can fit in at… UCF for sure. I’ll get on a visit back out there. It’s closer to home, and I like staying closer to family. I have been there for camps, but I haven’t been there for a game yet. I should be down there this fall.”
As a sophomore, Williams had 35 tackles, six interceptions, three pass breakups, one sack, and one forced fumble in 10 games. He’s also a track athlete, and you can certainly see some of that type of athleticism and speed on his tape.
Williams loves FSU’s aggressive defense under new coordinator Tony White and feels at home in Tallahassee. And, it helps that he’s pretty close to home, being in the same state.
FSU just has to hold those other schools off now.
