Florida WR Trevon Grimes opts out of bowl game to focus on NFL Draft

Florida Gators wide receiver Trevon Grimes has played his last game with the program.

Grimes announced on Monday via Twitter that he is opting out of participating in Wednesday's Cotton Bowl Classic against the Oklahoma Sooners, forgoing his final year of eligibility, and entering the 2021 NFL Draft:

As ESPN's Adam Rittenberg explained, Grimes transferred from the Ohio State Buckeyes to Florida in December 2017 and had started in every contest for the Gators this season through their loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Southeastern Conference title game on Dec. 19. He sits third on the team in receptions (38), receiving yards (589), and receiving scores (9).

In total, Grimes tallied 97 catches for 1,444 yards and 14 touchdowns during his tenure at Florida. Per Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times, Grimes considered turning pro after the 2019 season before returning to the Gators.

Charlie Campbell of Walter Football projects Grimes will fall to the third or fourth round of next year's draft but added on Dec. 5:

"Grimes has played well this season, showing mismatch size and playmaking ability. Florida has featured Kyle Pitts and Kadarius Toney, but at most schools, Grimes would be the No. 1 receiver. Grimes has the potential to be a riser in the pre-draft workouts."

Grimes is listed at 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds.
