Bru McCoy, a former five-star receiver recruit who made collegiate stops with the USC Trojans, Texas Longhorns, and Tennessee Volunteers, is calling it quits at 24 years old.

"Former Tennessee WR Bru McCoy is medically retiring from football," Jordan Schultz wrote Tuesday on Threads. "My understanding is it was made known during the draft not to select him — and now we know why. McCoy was high school teammates with Bryce Young at Mater Dei, where he was the U.S. Army Player of the Year."

McCoy announced the news with a statement on X, writing, "It's with a heavy heart but a feeling of gratitude that I share with you guys that I made the difficult decision to medically retire from football. This has been one of the toughest decisions of my life, but after careful consideration with my doctors, family, and people closest to me I've come to the conclusion that it's the right path for my long-term health and well-being."

McCoy suffered an ugly right ankle injury during a game in 2023 before returning to play for the Volunteers last season, totaling 39 catches for 472 yards and two touchdowns.

McCoy was the No. 2 overall prospect in California in 2019, according to 247Sports. He was rated in front of quarterback Jayden Daniels (No. 5), running back Zach Charbonnet (No. 6), and cornerback Trent McDuffie (No. 11).

In a 2018 scouting report, 247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins projected Bru McCoy to eventually be a first-round selection. Instead, he went undrafted and is now on to other endeavors.
