Years after taking the field as the Auburn Tigers quarterback, Jeremy Johnson has turned himself into a historic figure in Mexico's pro football landscape. And now, he's back in national headlines.

Between 2023 and 2024, Johnson led the Chihuahua Caudillos to a pristine and historic 25-0 record and two LFA (Liga de Fútbol Americano) championship wins. He won league MVP for his 2024 run. However, after a perfect 2024 season, Johnson announced he was retiring from football.

That retirement came to a quick end. The Caudillos announced Tuesday Johnson was returning midseason. But the intriguing part of the story is why and how Johnson is returning.

The Caudillos, a team which formerly played in a competing league to the LFA, signed Johnson when they arrived at the top league in the country in 2023. The move paid off as the team racked up 25 consecutive wins including two championship games. However, following Johnson's retirement, it took four games of the 2025 season for that streak to come to a surprising end.

The Caudillos, who were heavily favored going into a game versus the Puebla Arcángeles, lost 26-20 last Saturday. The front office's reaction was seemingly quick, as they drew Johnson out of retirement and him on the practice field by Tuesday.

Around the country, the move is being perceived as a knee-jerk reaction, but context is needed to truly explain it. The Caudillos never wanted to move on from Johnson and it's fair to say neither did he. But with a delayed start to the league, conflict existed for the quarterback as he recently took on an offensive coordinator gig for Charles Henderson High School.

Now, the two sides reached an agreement to accommodate to Johnson's schedule needs. In other words, it's not quite that the Caudillos desperately reached for the phone the moment they lost a game. But rather, after two weeks of overall struggles on the field, the sides explored their situations once again and a deal was reached.

Regardless of how things really went down, Johnson is now centerstage of a wild storyline as fans look at him as the potential savior of a team that's dominated the league for two consecutive years. Can the former Auburn Tiger make it three?
