Former Florida State Wide Receiver Ruled Out For The Remainder Of Season

Florida State is first in the ACC in scoring with an offense that features vertical threats such as Johnny Wilson, Keon Coleman, and Jaheim Bell. However, there were some question marks about how the Seminoles would replace Mycah Pittman in the slot after his decision to transfer from the program following the spring.

Pittman landed at Utah in May and surprised everyone when he was able to suit up during the season-opening victory against Florida. He caught two passes for nine yards in the win after working his way back from a serious hip injury that was originally expected to sideline him for part of the year.

Unfortunately, the injury bug has bitten Pittman again as Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham announced on Monday that the wide receiver will be out for the remainder of the 2023 season. He'll also have to undergo another surgery for an undisclosed issue.

The California native was limited to two appearances with the Utes. He caught three passes for 20 yards, rushed one for -2 yards, and returned five punts for 33 yards on the season.

This is another disappointing chapter in what is turning out to be an injury-plagued college career for Pittman. He suffered a broken arm and a collarbone injury that both required surgery while he was at Oregon. Pittman then played the entirety of the 2022 season with a labrum tear in his hip that also forced him to go under the knife. The latest ailment will result in his fourth surgery since 2019.

Despite playing at less than 100% during his lone season at Florida State, he caught a career-high 32 passes for 330 yards with three touchdowns through the air while rushing seven times for 35 yards. He also provided consistency as a punt returner for the program, returning 18 punts for 169 yards (9.4 yards per return).

It's unclear if Pittman plans to utilize a sixth year of college eligibility. During his time with the Seminoles, Ducks, and Utes, he's totaled 73 catches for 897 yards and five touchdowns.

The Seminoles have mainly turned to Destyn Hill, Ja'Khi Douglas, and Winston Wright (no longer with the team) to soak up the majority of snaps in the slot. Those three have combined for nine catches for 81 yards. Florida State has kept things interesting by also giving Keon Coleman, Jaheim Bell, Kyle Morlock, Lawrance Toafili, Johnny Wilson, and Trey Benson reps at the position.
