Former Gophers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis to visit Rutgers
Nick Wosika / USA TODAY Sports

Former Gophers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis could be in for a reunion with a former Gophers coach.

It was reported by various media outlets on Tuesday that Kaliakmanis will be visiting Rutgers over the weekend, where former Gophers offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca now serves as the offensive coordinator.

Ciarrocca coached Kaliakmanis during the 2022 season.

Kaliakmanis threw for 1,838 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions as the starting quarterback for Minnesota in a trying year that ended in a 5-7 record.

Just days after the Gophers’ season ended with a loss to Wisconsin, Kaliakmanis entered the portal. Darren Wolfson reported on Skor North’s Mackey & Judd show that the relationship between Kaliakmanis and Gophers coach P.J. Fleck had soured in recent weeks.

Neither Fleck or Kaliakmanis have said anything publicly, but the quarterback’s father, Alex, posted on Twitter that he’s “trying very hard not to comment on a program that our family decided to cut ties with.”

The Gophers landed New Hampshire quarterback Max Brosmer in the transfer portal shortly after Kaliakmanis had entered the portal himself.
