Former Heisman favorite QB Spencer Rattler enters transfer portal

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler plans to transfer, he announced Monday with a statement addressed to Sooner Nation on Twitter.

"Thank you for allowing me to be a student-athlete at this prestigious institution," the statement reads, in part. "At this time, I would like to announce that I have decided to enter the transfer portal to continue my academic and athletic career. Thank you again, Oklahoma. I will miss you."

Rattler, 21, was the betting Heisman Trophy favorite entering the 2021 season after throwing 28 touchdowns with seven interceptions along with six rushing touchdowns during his redshirt freshman season in 2020. But he struggled with consistency early in his sophomore campaign and was eventually benched in favor of Caleb Williams.

Rattler finished the regular season of his sophomore season with 12 passing touchdowns, five interceptions, and three rushing touchdowns.

The decision for Rattler to head elsewhere comes a day after Oklahoma's coach Lincoln Riley accepted the head coaching job at USC. Shortly after news of Riley's departure broke, several top recruits decommitted from Oklahoma, including five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson.
