After leading the Texas Longhorns to back-to-back College Football Playoff Semifinal appearances, it may have been surprising to some Texas fans when quarterback Quinn Ewers was taken in the last round of the NFL Draft.
As pick No. 231, Ewers was selected by the Miami Dolphins to sit behind starter Tua Tagovailoa and potentially fight for the second-string spot behind Zach Wilson. Well, with the way that he performed in his debut during the first week of preseason, he seemingly answered fans’ questions as to why he was selected so low.
In the Dolphins’ first game of the preseason against the Bears, Ewers threw for just 27%, only completing five of his 18 attempted passes, tallying 91 passing yards. To make matters worse, he also fumbled twice, both of which were picked up by the Bears.
It was unfortunate for Texas fans to see, knowing that he’s capable of much more than such a subpar performance. But for some Dolphins fans, it was their first impression of their newest quarterback.
Although it was a bad outing for the first week, he’s more than that. He’s a former 5-star recruit who was ranked as the No. 1 player in the nation out of high school. He’s a former three-year starter who has led Texas to success, and he knows that.
After an unimpressive performance, Ewers seemingly channeled something inside himself. During the Dolphins’ second game of preseason, he went out on the field and did what he knows how to do best.
Ewers took over for Wilson in the second half of the game, completed 11-17 passes, and threw two touchdowns, playing a major role in Miami’s 24-17 victory over the Lions. He also finished the game with a passer rating of 123.7, up 75.6 from last week.
After accumulating 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns in Austin, every Texas fan knew that Ewers against the Bears wasn’t the Ewers that they’ve known and seen before. But he looked more like himself against the Lions.
Through fall camp, he seemed to have been getting some attention, even getting hyped up by Tagovailoa after one practice. It was surprising to see such a poor performance from a quarterback who had as good a college career as he did.
But now it seems as if he’s getting back into the rhythm. Texas fans can catch Ewers back in action on Saturday when the Dolphins take on the Jacksonville Jaguars at 6 PM CT on NFL Network to close out the preseason.
