Former Michigan football star calls it quits

During the middle years of Jim Harbaugh’s tenure in Ann Arbor — the 2017 and 2018 seasons — former Michigan football star Chase Winovich was a fan favorite. The height of his popularity was in 2018, when he led the Wolverines to impressive wins over Wisconsin (38-13), Michigan State (21-7), Penn State (42-7) and more during the team’s infamous “Revenge Tour.” This week, after five years in the NFL with the New England Patriots, the ex-Michigan edge rusher officially announced his retirement.

Former Michigan football star announces retirement

It has been an impressive 21-year football career for ex-Wolverine edge rusher Chase Winovich, who officially announced his retirement from the NFL and the sport this week.

“Thank you to my family (shoutout to my siblings and their spouses), friends, coaches, teammates, teachers, nutritionists, equipment managers, massage therapists, chefs, chiropractors, and anyone else who played a role during my time playing football,” Winovich’s statement read. “I couldn’t have done this without you! God Bless! The journey has only just begun.”

As many fans recall, Chase Winovich was an impressive force during his time with the Michigan football program. He appeared on Jim Harbaugh’s first four Michigan rosters (2015-2018), making a major impact on the 2017 and 2018 teams before heading to the NFL in 2019 and playing a five-year career in New England.

During his time with Michigan football, Winovich appeared in 45 games, recording 184 tackles, 43 tackles for loss, and 18 sacks — he also had a pass deflection, three forced fumbles, and three fumbles recovered during his days in Ann Arbor.
