A former Michigan student claims legendary college football head coach Bo Schembechler knew about sexual abuse allegations made against former team doctor Robert Anderson.
As noted by ESPN's Dan Murphy and Kim Kozlowski of The Detroit Free Press, the student reported the incidents said to have occurred in 1982 and 1983 to Schembechler, and Schembechler advised the student to speak with athletic director Don Canham.
According to details mentioned in a lawsuit, Canham took no actions.
"In effect, in my opinion, Canham perpetrated Anderson's abuse," the anonymous man told media via a Thursday news conference.
He added that Schembechler was "visibly angry" when told of the abuse, but that he doesn't hold the former coach responsible.
"The University of Michigan had the opportunity long before I got there because Don Canham had known," he said.
Anderson worked at the university for more than 30 years and has been accused of sexual misconduct by hundreds of patients since February. Anderson died in 2008. Canham passed away in 2005.
Schembechler, arguably the most beloved figure in the history of Michigan football, won 13 Big Ten championships during a 21-year tenure that lasted from 1969 to 1989. He died in 2006.
