The Michigan Wolverines are now 6-2 after taking down their in-state rival Michigan State Spartans this past weekend, but one former star player believes the team can be so much better if Sherrone Moore takes care of a few things on offense.
It's no secret the wide receiver play for Michigan has been inconsistent (to say the least) this season outside of true freshman Andrew Marsh and a few nice plays made by Donaven McCulley. However, Devin Gardner, a former star quarterback for Michigan went as far as to say that head coach Moore is committing "coaching malpractice" in regards to his handling of one wide receiver on the team.
For those who may have forgotten, Devin Gardner was Michigan's quarterback during a few of the Brady Hoke years. He still ranks third all-time for Michigan in passing yards and seventh in total touchdowns among all Wolverines players in the history of the program. His opinion of the team certainly shouldn't be taken lightly.
Gardner has clearly seen enough of the Semaj Morgan experience this season, and shared as much on his show "The Blue Print" this week. Semaj Morgan now has six drops on just 33 targets this season, and consistently looks completely lost. Morgan logged zero catches on two targets against Michigan State this week and got in running back Justice Haynes' way on what could have been a long touchdown run (see in post below).
Gardner believes this is not just hurting Michigan's offense, but quarterback Bryce Underwood's development too:
"Bryce [Underwood] didn't take a huge leap forward, but he didn't take a huge step back...The coaches feel committed to having [Semaj Morgan] on the field. There are going to be times throughout the rest of the season where Semaj does what Semaj has been doing. We're not going to address it anymore...because at this point it's coaching malpractice, right? He's not putting himself out there. He's made it clear that he's not having the confidence – I don't know what it is, the catching, whatever it is. The reason [we have to bring it up again] is because it's kind of stunting the growth of Bryce Underwood."
Imagine watching this play then giving Semaj Morgan more playing time this week

Calling Sherrone Moore's decision to stick with his veteran wide receiver "malpractice" might be a bit strong, but it's hard to argue that Semaj Morgan has been anything but terrible this season. Six drops when his average depth of target is 4.4 yards downfield. Mistakes in run blocking. A fumble on one of his four carries this season. He's been a liability. But he hasn't been the only problem either.
Michigan skill players have logged nearly 20 drops this season on less than 200 total pass attempts from Bryce Underwood (yes, almost 10% of his passes are dropped). All the drops, the miscues, the mistakes, all of that has derailed Michigan's offense here and there throughout the season, so Gardner's assertion that it may be stunting Underwood's growth makes a ton of sense. Still, coach Moore and company seem committed to Semaj Morgan and their conservative offensive approach.
This is a Michigan team who should be able to coast through their next three games ahead of Ohio State, possibly making the College Football Playoff. However, as Gardner and his co-host continued on to break down, if this offense doesn't find more balance and consistency surrounding Bryce Underwood, Michigan is going to struggle when it matters most.
It seems the Wolverines are content settling for a bunch of inefficient underneath passes to Semaj Morgan, hiding or saving their best for the Ohio State game, but Sherrone Moore needs to be careful here. If Underwood and the offense is completely unlocked ahead of the Ohio State game things might get ugly. Thankfully, the dominant run game driven by the dynamic duo of Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall continues to hide the team's deficiencies. Only time will tell if that's truly enough.
