Former Notre Dame football commit spurns the SEC and transfers to a prominent Midwest program

If the name Justyn Rhett sounds familiar to some, it’s because he was once committed to the University of Notre Dame in the 2023 recruiting class. The Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman standout was committed to the Fighting Irish for four months before he chose to reopen his recruitment in April of 2022. It was reported at the time that it was a mutual parting, but was still viewed as a loss regardless.

Rhett eventually ended up with the Georgia Bulldogs, and most seemed excited with the prospects of the talented cornerback developing down in Athens. Unfortunately, that development didn’t happen for Rhett, at least on the field. During the course of his two years with the Bulldogs, Rhett played in just four games and recorded a mere three total tackles. He was also moved to safety prior to the 2024 season.

With how little he has played, it wasn’t overly shocking to see Rhett opt to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opened. The 6-1, 200-pound defensive back will have three years of eligibility remaining, and he will be transferring to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The demand for Rhett was high, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise when you consider he is a talented player with three years of eligibility remaining. Rhett held a long list of offers coming out of Bishop Gorman. That list included the Bulldogs, the Irish, Alabama, Michigan, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Florida State among others.

Following the season, the Cornhuskers are going to have needs at both cornerback and safety. Tommi Hill and DeShon Singleton will both be out of eligibility, and finding talented answers is important. Rhett could theoretically fill into either spot if the need is there, and should have an opportunity to play early.
