Former Notre Dame quarterback eyeing revenge against the Fighting Irish following recent good news that he needed desperately

Former Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli did a lot of good things while a part of the Fighting Irish program. Considered the team’s top backup for multiple seasons in South Bend, he managed to throw for 772 yards and 10 touchdowns, while only throwing one interception and completing over 72 percent of his passes. The raw stats for Angeli were impressive in limited time.

Heading into this past offseason, the New Jersey native was viewed as one of the potential replacements for Riley Leonard behind center with him heading to the NFL. Angeli was the most experienced of the three options, but was tasked with fending off talented youngsters CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey. It was not going to be an easy task.

Following spring practice, Angeli opted to enter the Transfer Portal after he was told that he was not going to be the starter. He eventually ended up with Syracuse. The 6-2, 208-pound passer arrived with the Orange program with two years of eligibility remaining.

Angeli did not, however, land into a situation where he was just handed the starting position. He was going to have to battle with former LSU signal caller Rickie Collins, another talented transfer quarterback. After some back and forth reporting on the battle, it was announced on Monday that Angeli was named the starter for the team.

The redshirt junior is hoping he can have a similar revival as Kyle McCord had last season. Also a native of New Jersey, McCord left Ohio State prior to last season with a chip on his shoulder. He responded with a season for the record books, throwing for 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns in 2024. McCord was a sixth round draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Head coach Fran Brown has the vibes around the Syracuse program as strong as it has been in a very long time. The Orange staff has had to overhaul the wide receiver position with Trebor Pena and Jackson Meeks leaving this offseason, as well as tight end Oronde Gadsden Jr. Former Texas and Washington transfer Johntay Cook is one of the main names to know entering the season.

As long as he performs well and stays healthy, this means that Angeli is going to return to South Bend on November 22 for a battle against Notre Dame. His return is going to be heavily discussed, especially if he and Syracuse are playing well. It is the second to last game of the season for the Fighting Irish, so a playoff berth could also be on the line.

That sets up for the ultimate revenge game.
